Publisher's summary

"[Narrator Julia] Whelan's performance is unforgettable in this darkly romantic fantasy about one young woman cursed always to be forgotten.... Her depiction of the darkness is smooth with a low cadence, capturing listeners' attention and their heart strings." (Booklist)

In the vein of The Time Traveler’s Wife and Life After Life, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is New York Times best-selling author V. E. Schwab’s genre-defying tour de force.

A life no one will remember. A story you will never forget.

France, 1714: In a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever - and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.

Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world.

But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name.

Editor's Pick

A genre-bending epic
I’ve been in a continuous cycle of listening ruts throughout the pandemic. It’s become increasingly hard to predict my listening “moods,” and I’ve found, more often than not, that I’m comforted by relistening to old, familiar stories. That being said, V.E. Schwab’s new fantasy checks four of my boxes that remain consistent no matter what havoc the pandemic is wreaking on my listening life: time travel ✅, romance ✅, hidden bookstores ✅, Julia Whelan ✅. I cannot wait to get lost in time with Addie LaRue, and uncover all her secrets. —Katie O., Audible Editor

I was hooked instantly

In the first few sentences I was hooked. I wanted to know more. its an excellent telling that combines history and present in a work of fiction. I'm not always a fan of stories that skip in timeliness but this one was done in a way that made sense to me. highly recommend for anyone looking for a fiction novel that is an easy listen.

Long, but worth it.

This book will hook you! It gets a little long in the middle, but keep going. The ending is beautifully sculpted and the narration of the story makes it a work of art.

It’s okay...

The story is not as interesting as it seems nor will you change mind about its blend and cliche factor of it all.

it felt rushed at the end

I loved this book until things didn't make sense anout 2/3 way in, very rushed all is a sudden- it could have been 1.5 books. Relationships need more visible development, most of the main characters relationship was in-between the chapters. Julia was amazing though, great narrator

Is there a better combination?

Who doesn't love a great book and an even better narrator?

Who doesn't want to be loved, to be remembered, by those that we love, or by anyone at all?

Addie LaRue's story begins in the 1600's and spans 3 centuries. She is cursed to live a life in which no one remembers her name or her face. As she learns the ins and outs of her curse and its finer details, she sees war, and art, and peace, and beauty, and grief. She is stubborn and strong willed and the perfect protagonist whose story will keep you turning until the last page (or listeneing through the last second).

I highly recommend this audiobook read by Julia Whelan. 5/5 on all counts. Though it is in a different genre, if you loved the beautiful descriptions and language in Where the Crawdads Sing, pick this one up.

Love, life and the human experience

This story of a girl gifted and cursed with near immortality at the cost of never being able to leave a mark on the world makes you reevaluate everything. The author developed deep and relatable characters and convictions which always kept me wanting more. I definitely reccomend this book!

Such a great book

I loved the history aspects in this book. I felt the author did a great job of connecting the different timelines together. Overall the story was very good, I’ve thought about it many times since I read it so I believe that to be a good sign of a book worth reading (listening) to. The narrator also did a good job, I was sucked in. Give this a go!
