Contagious: Why Things Catch On | [Jonah Berger]

Contagious: Why Things Catch On

Why do some products get more word of mouth than others? Why does some online content go viral? Word of mouth makes products, ideas, and behaviors catch on. It's more influential than advertising and far more effective. Can you create word of mouth for your product or idea? According to Berger, you can. Whether you operate a neighborhood restaurant, a corporation with hundreds of employees, or are running for a local office for the first time, the steps that can help your product or idea become viral are the same.

Publisher's Summary

Why do certain products and ideas go viral? Dynamic young Wharton professor Jonah Berger draws on his research to explain the six steps that make products or ideas contagious.

Why do some products get more word of mouth than others? Why does some online content go viral? Word of mouth makes products, ideas, and behaviors catch on. It's more influential than advertising and far more effective.

Whether you operate a neighborhood restaurant, a corporation with hundreds of employees, or are running for a local office for the first time, the steps that can help your product or idea become viral are the same.

Contagious is filled with fascinating information drawn from Berger's research. You will be surprised to learn, for example, just how little word of mouth is generated online versus elsewhere. Already praised by Dan Ariely and Dan Gilbert, and sold in nine countries, this book is a must-listen for people who want their projects and ideas to succeed.

    "Disappointing"
Would you try another book from Jonah Berger and/or Keith Nobbs?

    maybe

Would you be willing to try another book from Jonah Berger? Why or why not?

maybe. The book is disappointing, for a professor and researcher like Dr Berger, the book is watered-down and it presents very little research. It does not allow you to form or support opinions based on actual experiments. It just gives you the 6 "contagious principles" according to the author, based on his opinion. But you don't know where the opinion came from.

If the author writes more scientific books, I'll be willing to read them (I think he has the knowledge) - but please, don't waterdown the book.

Would you be willing to try another one of Keith Nobbs’s performances?

    good performance.

    Any additional comments?

The best book in this space (by confession of the author in the introduction) is Made to Stick. I would recommend reading that one any day over this one.
Tipping point is interesting as well - enjoyable read, but as usual of Gladwell, more popular knowledge than scientific.

    "Facile and boring"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This book attempted to be like a Chip/Dan Heath treatment but it totally lacked their substance and style. The examples were generally mundane and he dragged them out.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I tried to listen to this many times but gave up because it just didn't get below the surface. I finally accepted the fact that it was too torturous and threw in the towel

    "Top 10 Books I've Read/Listened To"
If you could sum up Contagious in three words, what would they be?

    Meat. Logical. Applicable.

What did you like best about this story?

Without a doubt, the best part about this audiobook are the STEPPS. As a marketer that reads tons of books in this genre, I thought I had pretty much heard it all. This book surprised the heck out of me with it's awesomeness. Now, when I sit down to write copy for an ad, I can easily go through the STEPPS taught in this book to give it the best chance possible of becoming contagious; going viral.

    Any additional comments?

If you like Malcolm Gladwell books, you will love this book. Same kinda research, a little more entertaining and a lot more applicable.

    Story
"First audio book I may now buy hard copy!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Already recommended to two friends, a classmate, an instructor, and three coworkers. It has value beyond just being interesting. You can put these techniques to work whether you work in a small business, large corporation, start up, or teaching design students.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

The author takes readers interested in the field of behavioral economics (Gladwell, Freakonomics) and makes it useful with clear business value. Listening to other "marketing experts" talk about viral campaigns is comical: "Make a funny video" "Be authentic" "Do something shocking"

Have you listened to any of Keith Nobbs’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

At some points it was funny.

    Any additional comments?

If you like Gladwell don't give this a second thought, it is a no-brainer. Just buy it and thank me when you're done.

"Wow! A must read for all marketers"
Where does Contagious rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is the best book on this subject I have ever seen.

What does Keith Nobbs bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Keith made this come to life. He owned the words. I could not stop listening.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book has changed the way I'll look at marketing for ever.
