Publisher's summary

Audie Award Nominee, Humor, 2013

For fans of Tina Fey and David Sedaris - Internet star Jenny Lawson, aka The Bloggess, makes her literary debut.

Jenny Lawson realized that the most mortifying moments of our lives - the ones we'd like to pretend never happened - are in fact the ones that define us. In Let's Pretend This Never Happened, Lawson takes listeners on a hilarious journey recalling her bizarre upbringing in rural Texas, her devastatingly awkward high school years, and her relationship with her long-suffering husband, Victor.

Chapters include: "Stanley the Magical, Talking Squirrel", "A Series of Angry Post-It Notes to My Husband", "My Vagina Is Fine. Thanks for Asking", and "And Then I Snuck a Dead Cuban Alligator on an Airplane".

Featured Article: The Best Audiobooks for Soothing Anxiety

The care of family, friends, and a trusted therapist, practicing mindfulness, engaging in calming hobbies like yoga, journaling, walking in nature, or listening to music—these are just a few of the strategies that can ease the overwhelm. We’ve handpicked some of the best audiobooks that can soothe the symptoms of anxiety, break patterns of negative or unhealthy thought, and help ground or comfort you when things get tough.

Editor's Pick

Alas, poor Jenny…
"Just like the taxidermized, Yorick-like mouse on the cover, Let's Pretend This Never Happened is awkward, weird, and hilarious—as is the writer, Jenny Lawson, of The Bloggess fame. Her narration, too, makes this listen truly sing—quite literally when she belts out the chapter titles like a manic, singsong opera star. The whole package is so genuine and vulnerable that I frequently laughed to the point of tears as she regaled her experiences dealing with anxiety, depression, and social missteps. This is a title that could only be written by Lawson herself."

Funny Story, her voice is a little annoying

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Overall I enjoyed listening to it but i found myself having big gaps in between listening because her voice is pretty annoying so you have to be in the mood for something so intense.

OH MY!

What made the experience of listening to Let's Pretend This Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir) the most enjoyable?

I laughed out loud, once Jenny was out in the world - at least sorta on her own.

Has Let's Pretend This Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir) turned you off from other books in this genre?

Maybe it was because the Author read it. I sounded like early 70s canned music.

What three words best describe Jenny Lawson’s voice?

Authentic, rapid fire,

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

OH NO! I would be like all of the seasons of Gilmore Girls in one hour!

Any additional comments?

My daughter recommended it, and I can see why - we both could see so much of the eclectic but loving group of people that surrounded her from birth: family and friends. It took a minute to get into the cadence; I attributed that to the Author reading her own work. I laughed embarrassingly out loud through the middle at the gym - where I listen to books and music. By the end, well there was no ending, and it piqued my natural momma worries. I would recommend it to anyone with daughters between 25 and 35. And Dads too, you might get a glimpse of some one your child will likely take as a spouse. Men, if you need a primer on girl speak - this is a good one.

Almost gave up on it- glad I didn't.

I was having trouble sticking with it and paying attention at first. Others complained about her voice, but it grew on me. I'm glad I decided to give it another day and listen a little longer. It turned out to be very funny.

So good!!

I️ loved this book! I️ laughed out loud and cried a bit too. At times I️ felt her story mirrored parts of my own life. I️ appreciated her humor and loved the extra bit at the very end of the audible. I️ think I️ may listen to it again!

Ridiculously Entertaining

Would you listen to Let's Pretend This Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir) again? Why?

I would listen to it again on a car ride with a friend who hadn't heard it yet, but I don't usually re-read or re-listen to things.

What did you like best about this story?

The hilarious ridiculousness of the situations she gets into.

What does Jenny Lawson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her tone while reading the book adds to the experience. I wish she didn't have to sing the chapter titles though >.<
