Publisher's summary

Audie Award Nominee, Humor, 2013

For fans of Tina Fey and David Sedaris - Internet star Jenny Lawson, aka The Bloggess, makes her literary debut.

Jenny Lawson realized that the most mortifying moments of our lives - the ones we'd like to pretend never happened - are in fact the ones that define us. In Let's Pretend This Never Happened, Lawson takes listeners on a hilarious journey recalling her bizarre upbringing in rural Texas, her devastatingly awkward high school years, and her relationship with her long-suffering husband, Victor.

Chapters include: "Stanley the Magical, Talking Squirrel", "A Series of Angry Post-It Notes to My Husband", "My Vagina Is Fine. Thanks for Asking", and "And Then I Snuck a Dead Cuban Alligator on an Airplane".

Featured Article: The Best Audiobooks for Soothing Anxiety

The care of family, friends, and a trusted therapist, practicing mindfulness, engaging in calming hobbies like yoga, journaling, walking in nature, or listening to music—these are just a few of the strategies that can ease the overwhelm. We’ve handpicked some of the best audiobooks that can soothe the symptoms of anxiety, break patterns of negative or unhealthy thought, and help ground or comfort you when things get tough.

Editor's Pick

Alas, poor Jenny…
"Just like the taxidermized, Yorick-like mouse on the cover, Let's Pretend This Never Happened is awkward, weird, and hilarious—as is the writer, Jenny Lawson, of The Bloggess fame. Her narration, too, makes this listen truly sing—quite literally when she belts out the chapter titles like a manic, singsong opera star. The whole package is so genuine and vulnerable that I frequently laughed to the point of tears as she regaled her experiences dealing with anxiety, depression, and social missteps. This is a title that could only be written by Lawson herself."

Decent

I think I ruined this book for myself. It is funny, interesting, and worth listening to. However I listened straight through without a break and it was too much. The comedy was lost. Personally if I had keep it to a couple chapters, stories, at a time I would have enjoyed it better.

That said, the story regarding Victor and the rattlesnake totally was something I’d do! Too funny!

i expexted a bit more funny and humour from this.

it was more of a rambling memoir of stories, some out of order, that describe what happened to her.

what i got from this book is that the other is very self conscious and cant accept any funny/dumb thing that happened to her. its like you late at night before u sleep reminded of any cringy thing u ever did.

overall its a good book with a lot of rambling that doesnt seem to fit in until the author lets you know more about herself.

Will brighten your day.

A great story and performance. It can get a bit ranty at times, but then so does most stories featuring ones own life. Very enjoyable overall and is far more than just laughs, it is also a book on deep tragedies and how she overcame that.

Loved the reading

She is hilarious. I laughed hard many times as I listened The dialogue in this reading is similar to the Gilmore Girls bantering back and forth. I’m in Texas so I totally get all the Texas humor.
It was great and I’d recommend as a great listen during a Pandemic or anytime.

A Fun Listen

Jenny Lawson has a special way of being a lovable yet slightly unreliable narrator in her own memoir. She's the perfect narrator! This book is packed with funny moments that make you feel understood in a weird way. Her unique upbringing is fascinating to hear about, and she is open and honest about her struggles with anxiety that is relatable. I preferred her second book Furiously Happy but I would recommend both books as they are wonderful! I look forward to reading and listening to more of her writing.

One of the funniest books I've ever listened to

This is funny, it's weird, and it's one of my favorite books. I don't think this book is for everyone, but for those with a strange, dark sense of humor it is wonderful.

the best hot mess ever

I had a nightmare drive from Seattle to Portland that took almost twice what it should, and I didn't care. I laughed so hard I gave myself stomach cramps multiple times and have already recommended this book to three people, even though I just finished it about 10 minutes ago. I cannot understate how amazing this experience is, and anyone with a strong stomach needs this book in their life.
