Publisher's summary

A woman receives a bewildering inheritance that may have something to do with her past in this twisty and addictive psychological thriller from the New York Times bestselling author Entertainment Weekly calls “impossible to outwit.”

Struggling artist Skyler Moore is flabbergasted when she receives a suspicious phone call from a lawyer she’s never met regarding a “private matter.” As soon as she arrives at the law firm’s office, she learns she’s the recipient of a large inheritance, a life-changing sum that will allow her to realize her long-held dream of becoming a mother. But who was her benefactor, Christopher Whaley? The late man’s name means nothing to Skyler, and she has no idea why he would leave her such an enormous bequest.

Looking into his background, Skyler finally realizes they met once at a hotel bar and shared a one-night stand. But they never exchanged numbers, or even last names, and that was over a decade ago. She wonders if the inheritance is meant to be a message of some kind, but can’t imagine what it might be.

Chris’ family is confused and suspicious too, and his widow accuses Skyler of having an affair with her late husband, then threatens revenge. In order to protect herself, Skyler has to understand the reason the money was left to her. But as she digs for the truth, it becomes clear that Chris Whaley might have taken other secrets to the grave, ones that could have terrifying consequences for her . . .

A Little Slow but Worth the Credit

I enjoyed the book, but it seemed to move a little slow. I would find myself frustrated with the main character not connecting the dots. It seemed obvious right away that X was connected to Y in a few situations, but it took a long time to get there. With that said, I listen to a lot of these books, and in “real life” you’re not always looking for a twist. In that sense, the main character was realistic. Overall, it’s not my favorite and it’s not my least favorite either. I don’t regret my purchase.

Loved it! Nice description of characters and actions. Loved how it kept you guessing until the end.

Excellent story, but too predictable for me

The story itself was very well written. The narrator was easy to listen to and kept my attention throughout the whole story. The plot twists and the main character were a little too predictable for me, but no digs at the author for that. Although it was a little slow at the start, it was overall a great book.

Unpredictable and Captivating

I did not see that ending coming. However was pleased to see everything come full circle and give is the ending we needed.

At times I was lost on when the author changed characters because there was minimal shift in tone but overall I enjoyed that she didn’t try hard to become characters.

Dramatic and mysterious

This wasn’t anything too heart pounding or over the top, but it was an excellent story! I loved the way things tied together and it was a nice change of pace compared to most M&T I have listened to lately. I really enjoyed this one from beginning to end!

One of her best ones yet!

Loved the plot and the suspense was great! It wasn’t too outlandish which I like in mysteries. Kate White is by far my favorite author in this genre.

Great Storyline

A really new type of storyline that kept me wondering how it would
all tie together. I wouldn't call
it a twist ending but a "fall into place".
Very enjoyable to listen to.

Very descriptive

It did seem obvious there was a connection, but quite a few red herrings thrown in to keep the reader guessing. It would have been slow reading , but I listened to it on audio and was able to multi task at the same time. I definitely want to read Kate White’s other books

Good story, worth the read

This was a pretty good story with a bit of a twist at the end. A little slow in some parts but not bad. Had a good and surprising ending as well.
