Publisher's summary

A woman burdened by war...A doctor torn between passion and duty...A sweeping tale of love in the face of dishonor from the incomparable storyteller—Kathleen Woodiwiss.

Alaina MacGaren is forced to flee the devastation of her homeland in the guise of a young boy, only to find sanctuary in the arms of an enemy. Cole Latimer is a dashing Yankee surgeon who has served the Union faithfully, and his tender heart compels him to help a ragged, innocent "lad" in need—never suspecting the rags conceal a bewitching belle suspected of being a rebel spy.

But Alaina's masquerade does not fool Cole for long. And the strength, courage, and breathtaking sensuality of this woman whom it would be treasonous to love sets duty and desire at war within him. Yet Destiny has joined them for good or ill—and they both must follow where their hearts would lead them, if they are to build a glorious new life together out of the ashes of the old.

Wonderful walk down nostalgia lane.

I read this book when I was a teenager and it was my absolute favorite historical romance novel. When I saw it was available on audible, I couldn’t wait to revisit some old friends. I was not disappointed- the narration was spot on. The story as fun, romantic, and suspenseful as when it was first released in print.

I have read this book many many times over the years. It is a favorite for sure and this audio version was wonderful .

The accents were great although I wish Cole had had more animation in the time of his voice, it was the one character that always seemed a bit flat .

Another place and time.

I devoured anything written by KEW in the early 80’s and loved them all. A dear friend introduced me to her writing and I never forgot about them through many years. How fun it is to now hear them through Audible.
Sigh.

Love this book

Loved this book since it was first released (yes I was there). KEW books are beautifully written. She takes you back in time, in which the stories are set. *Check the Wokeness at the door it's insulting.

Great read!

The forward was well done - it’s interesting how the classics are so accepted in literature yet some reading these books now, especially the early ones, don’t understand that we, in a way, are getting new classics.

The writing of the time — 1979 — is stylized in portraying an era’s flavors, and written in a permissiveness that won’t be seen by writers in 2023. For all that, the books descriptions handling of sex is tame and discreet and still let the reader’s imagination take control.

The story is beautiful with wonderful prose and and a rich story line. You find yourself laughing and crying, for the characters and for yourself.

The author truly wrote a great story!
