Publisher's summary

"Narrator Grover Gardner...makes the experience of listening to this audiobook as delightful as can be." (AudioFile Magazine)

This Christmas, lawyer Andy Carpenter and his golden retriever, Tara, can't say no to helping young Danny and his dachshund, Murphy.

Lawyer Andy Carpenter and his wife, Laurie, have started a new Christmas tradition. Their local pet store has a Christmas tree, where instead of ornaments there are wishes from those in need. One poignant wish leads Andy to a child named Danny, whose selfless plea strikes a chord. Danny asked Santa for a coat for his mother, a sweater for his dachshund, Murphy, and for the safe return of his missing father.

It turns out Danny’s father doesn't want to be found, he’s on the run after just being arrested for a murder that took place 14 years ago - a murder that Danny’s mother swears he didn’t commit.

With his trademark humor and larger-than-life characters - including a police officer and his K-9 partner, Simon - Rosenfelt never fails to deliver as Andy and his eccentric crew dash to reunite a family in time for Christmas.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Grover Gardner delivers an exciting performance as the character of Andy Carpenter, an eccentric lawyer who hates to work but gets roped by his wife into defending a man accused of a fourteen-year-old murder. With effective pacing and a sense of energy sometimes held back deliberately and at other times released with gusto, Gardner makes the experience of listening to this audiobook as delightful as can be. Listeners will hang on every word as Andy fights to free his client. He becomes especially endearing to listeners when he takes on an additional client, a police dog, an action that leads to Andy's salvation later in the audiobook." (AudioFile Magazine)

Was dry in some spots, but an overall good story. Would like to read another one, but have the dogs in more.

Fun mystery & clever writing

This was my first David Rosenfelt book and I loved it. The story was interesting, I liked the characters and the clever writing made me smile a lot. The narrator was entertaining and very listenable. I will for sure listen to more in this series.

Clever plot

As usual, Rosenfelt delivers a fun, smart book. This time I didn’t figure out the plot —I was pleasantly surprised at the end. Rosenfelt is deft at including dogs and children without being too cutesy. Grover Gardner is still at the top of his game as narrator.

Always good

Rosenfelt is always good and Gardner is one of the top 2 narrators of any audiobook. I can always get lost in Andy Carpenter stories as well as Rosenfelt's other characters.

Not sure what the title has to do with the story

The story was great and I thoroughly enjoyed it but the title had very, very little to do with the story.

Dachshund did not play important role

I ordered this because I thought it would be about a dog and about a dachshund. The story was interesting and enjoyable, but I felt cheated because the dachshund was a hook rather than an integral part of the story. Had some funny lines. I’ll try another by this author but won’t expect it to be a dog book just a clever who done it.
