Publisher's summary

Hunter Diaz scraped and fought his way out of the gangs of East LA to serve honorably as a SEAL in the United States Navy. When his adopted grandmother tells him his childhood sweetheart is in trouble back home, he returns to the place he vowed to leave firmly in the past.

Aliana Novak spent most of her school years being bullied. Her only refuge was Hunter Diaz, until the day he graduated and left her to deal with the tormentors herself. Those horrific experiences molded her into what she is today and made her the perfect candidate for vice principal of one of the toughest schools in East LA. As she fights for her students to live the best lives they can, she is targeted by one of the most dangerous gangs in the city.

Hunter expects to find the same awkward and fragile girl he once knew, instead he finds a beautiful and strong woman who is willing to risk anything for the children under her care. As Hunter tries to rekindle the deep feelings they once had for one another, Aliana withdraws further into herself. What happened to her while he was gone? Can Hunter break down her walls and prove to her he is still her knight in shining armor before she ends up dead?

Contains mature themes.

Black Dawn strikes again!

Her Passionate Hero was one of the first Caitlyn O'Leary books I read and it's still a favorite. Caitlyn has a talent for writing flawed characters. I should probably put here that there are some trigger warnings in this book: gangs, rape (not seen, only discovered after the fact), bully-ing, references to eating disorders, and self-harm (not seen, again only after the fact). Caitlyn writes these things very believably, especially how Aliana handles her current and past struggles. You can feel the pain between the characters. A lot of times I'm not a fan of 'second chance' stories, but this one was amazing.

Aiden Snow did an amazing performance. He is extremely talented. Often I find the female voices narrated by males (especially those with deeper voices) to be annoying or indistinguishable. Not so here. Also his accents were rather impressive. The story is set in LA gang territory and the characters didn't bleed into one another at all. Also, one family is Czech (Aliana, her grandmother, mother, and father) and all the voices are very distinguishable. He even manages to increase Aliana's accent as necessary when described in the narration.

Overall a wonderful performance of a wonderful story. I wish more of Caitlyn's books were in audible. The newer ones (Night Storm) have moved to the two narrator, non full-cast, model that I can't stand (there end up being two versions of each character). This one, however, perfection!

Wow! Doesn’t disappoint!

It was fabulous! I definitely recommend this if you want an easy listen with just right amount of plot and character development. I adore the voice of the narrator and he does a great job differentiating the characters. Happy listening!

sweet

I found it sad that they wasted 13 years for what seemed like no reason. I love how these guys are always there for each other no questions asked.
