Zweig askerlik görevini yerine getirmeyi reddedip 1918 yılında Avusturya'nın izniyle İsviçre'ye gitmiş, 9 Marttan itibaren bir yıl boyunca Zürih Gölü tepelerindeki Rüschlikon köyünde, Hotel Belvoir'da yaşamıştı. Genç ressam Ferdinand da Birinci Dünya Savaşı sırasında Zürih Gölü tepelerindeki bir köyde, içinde, kendine ait bir atölyenin de olduğu bir evde derin fakat yanıltıcı bir huzurla yaşamaktadır. Yeterli insan gücünün olmaması, Hitler’i ülkede bulunan her erkekten yararlanmaya zorluyordu. Firariler, suçlular ve politik mahkumlar da aftan yararlanarak orduya kaydoluyordu. Kendilerini ceza taburlarında bulan bu askerler, en tehlikeli görevlere atanıyorlardı. İşin en zor kısmı koşulsuz itaat sağlamaktı. Gerek küfürlerle gerekse Almanca talimatlarla, bir ceza taburuna ait olduklarını ve bu yüzden dünyanın en iyi askerleri olmaları gerektiğini günde en az yirmi kere duyuyorlardı. 27. Panzer Alayı, askerlerin hiçbirinin inanmadığı bir savaşta mücadele etmek zorundaydı.

27. Panzer Alayının askerleri geri çekiliyordu. Alman şehirlerinin üzerine müttefiklerin bombaları yağarken, askerler de bu korkunç vurgunda rol alıyordu. Tanklar, dayanılmaz kış koşullarında adeta bitmeyecekmiş gibi görünen bir ölüm yürüyüşüyle Rus bozkırlarında güçlükle ilerliyordu. Binlerce mülteci yollara dökülmüştü. Rus savaş uçakları, tıpkı diğer katiller gibi alçaktan uçarak aşağıdaki mülteci sürüsünü gökyüzüne doğru yükselen tek bir kederli çığlığa dönüştürüyordu. Sven Hassel, gönüllü olarak Alman silahlı kuvvetlerindeki bir ceza taburunda görev yapmıştır.
