Yet behind the collar are men with unique stories, ordinary backgrounds, and extraordinary faith. FAIRACRES PUBLICATIONS 074 George Herbert’s anguish when he sensed that God was calling him to become a priest, his almost mystical vision of the priestly office, and the total dedication with which he finally embraced it, provide us with inspiration and encouragement in our own desire to serve God. In this perceptive study of four of Herbert’s best-loved poems, ‘The Collar’, ‘Love’, ‘Aaron’, and ‘The Flower’, Kenneth Mason shows how Herbert’s way with words illuminates God’s ways with the human heart. Kenneth Mason, born in 1931, was ordained priest in 1959. After ...

Our Lord’s invitation to the rich young man in the Gospel, “If you wish to be perfect, sell all… then come follow me,” essentially links material renunciation to perfect discipleship. Sister Le examines how Aquinas’ embroilment in the mendicant controversy in the 13th century led to his unique exposition and defense of the necessity of evangelical poverty for Christian perfection, a position she demonstrates to be applicable in diverse religious and lay states of life.

Can devotion to God survive the awakening of earthly desire? Luis de Vargas has dedicated his life to the Church. On the verge of ordination, he returns to his Andalusian village for a final visit before taking his sacred vows. There he meets Pepita Jiménez—a beautiful young widow whose grace, intelligence, and quiet strength captivate everyone around her, including his own father, who hopes to marry her. Luis tells himself his feelings are purely spiritual, that he can guide her soul while keeping his own heart pure. But as spring unfolds in the Spanish countryside, letters to his uncle...

How shall we live? What is the good life? What is the value of a person? What is my place in this world? Is God active in this world? These are questions that have been asked in every culture and in every era. From the Hebrew concept of Shalom (wholeness/well-being) to the Greek concept of Eudaimonia (happiness) and even to the American notion that all people have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, great thinkers have pondered what it means for humans to flourish.

They combine learning, authority and readability and are written in an ecumenical spirit of striking breadth and generosity. These two essays, together with a series of letters she wrote to a novice testing her vocation to the religious life, demonstrate her ...

A Catholic Gift Book for Teachers is a thoughtful collection of reflections and prayers for Catholic teachers, catechists, homeschool parents, and educators who carry the quiet responsibility of forming young souls. Written with warmth, honesty, and reverence, this book speaks to the real life of teaching: the lessons that do not go as planned, the students who are difficult to reach, the work no one sees, the prayers offered before class, and the fruit that may not be ...
