I Finland holdt forsvarerne noenlunde stand, men lenger sør var Hitlers armeer nær et sammenbrudd. Og Den røde armé viste ingen nåde på veien fram mot Berlin.

Om morgenen 6. august 1945 løste besetningen på flyet Enola Gay ut en atombombe over Hiroshima. Få minutter etter var den japanske provinsbyen forvandlet til et brennende helvete. Tre dager senere led Nagasaki den samme skjebnen. Selv de forherdede japanske generalene, som faktisk var fast bestemt på at landet skulle fortsette kampen, var rystet over de ufattelige ødeleggelsene. Og da keiseren selv også talte for å overgi seg, valgte Japan å akseptere en betingelsesløs kapitulasjon.
