I started writing for myself for two reasons. Firstly, to help me to cope through a very stressful time – my wife’s severe illness. I did this mainly through poetry. The second was to share with my friends and acquaintances my motorcycling adventures. It was not until I joined Stroud Writers that I started to develop the skills and techniques of a storyteller. Soon after joining the group, they encouraged me to write fiction, something I always had difficulty with. However, within 16 months of joining, I had written and self-published my first novel. A veteran of World War I, British RAF Captain C.K. Shepherd arrived in New York in June 1919, bought a top-of-the-line Henderson four-cylinder motorcycle, and headed west on a solo cross-country adventure to see America. He set off on his adventures, arriving in San Francisco two months later. Having completed his voyage, he sold his beloved motorcycle, dubbed “Lizzie”, on the street in San Francisco and then made his way back to his home in Birmingham, England.

The motorcycle was invented in 1885 when two visionary Germans decided to attach a small internal combustion engine to a bicycle. From that humble origin begins a remarkable story of technological innovation, record-setting, and the formation of a whole new subculture of society. People began racing motorcycles not long after their introduction. In grueling endurance races, an American company named Harley-Davidson rode to the front of the pack with a thunderous roar.
