La denominación de arte gótico para clasificar al estilo artístico que floreció desde el siglo XIII al XV en toda Europa parece la debemos al Vasari, que en su libro critico e histórico del arte europeo le define con este nombre por sospechar su procedencia germánica. Nada más lejos de la realidad, pues el estilo gótico sólo es una evolución del románico anterior.

Sin embargo, en España no hubo una verdadera burguesía más que en Cataluña y Levante. En los reinos centrales la aristocracia y las Ordenes monásticas monopolizaron la casi totalidad de la riqueza. Sólo en el Principado de Cataluña existe una clase social de negociantes, armadores y artesanos que va tomando auge a medida que avanza la Edad Media.

El estilo gótico es el característico de la Baja Edad Media y su representación arquitectónica más importante son las catedrales que definen esta época como el románico había caracterizado a la anterior. La catedral gótica es una obra maestra de la arquitectura de todos los tiempos que ha dejado buenas muestras de su valor en muchas ciudades europeas bajomedievales.
