Gnostic Religion

Gnosticism is one of the great mysteries in the history of Western religion. At its core is an ancient Greek word, gnosis, a word prominent in the writings of Plato which refers to a deep personal knowledge or understanding that often transcends the physical world. The Gnostics painted a picture of a fallen, broken world in which physicality was a product of a lesser deity. This deity was created in defiance of the One and in order to trap humans and blind them to the truths of their predicament and divine origins.

Humanity is divided in three types of persons: Believers, atheists and agnostics. For Osho, this last type, the agnostic is far above the first two and it is something intrinsic to the true seeker. Nevertheless, there is a fourth type of person, one that does not fit in any of these categories: The Gnostic, the one who knows. In December 1945, a farmer in Upper Egypt smashed open a buried jar and found thirteen leather-bound books that had been hidden for over a thousand years. The Nag Hammadi library — as it came to be known — contained fifty-two texts from an ancient tradition that mainstream Christianity had done its best to erase: the Gnostics. For most of history, Gnosticism was known only through the writings of its enemies. The Church Fathers described it as bizarre, dangerous, and heretical. They were not neutral reporters. The Nag Hammadi discovery let the Gnostics speak for themselves for the first...

The evolution of the Sacred Worship of Sophia, Mary Magdalene, and Mother Mary are traced through the Gnostic Scriptures. Sophia would come to be considered a force or conduit of the Holy Spirit, in part due to the fact that the Holy Spirit was also considered a feminine and creative force from the Supreme God. As the emerging orthodox church became more and more oppressive to women, later even labeling them "occasions of sin", the Gnostics countered by raising women to equal status.
