Zonder dat de dreiging van de oorlog ook maar even verdwijnt, vecht de jongen in zijn schuilplaats tegen zijn angsten en zijn erotische obsessies. In 1979 herschreef Jan Wolkers het boek naar aanleiding van de verfilming die datzelfde jaar uitkwam. In 2006 werd het boek door Dick Matena in omgewerkt tot strip in drie delen.
