In het vierde deel van de Achterhoekse detectiveserie Islasec-Detectives heeft de half-IJslandse Laufey Gísladóttir met haar beveiligingsbedrijfje een opdracht aangenomen bij manege De Sterrehoeve. Er komen steeds duurdere paarden te staan en de paardenrijschool moet daarom beter beveiligd worden. Maar als er kort na aankomst een peperduur springpaard wordt vergiftigd en Laufey een opvallende vondst doet bij de dierenkliniek in het dorp lijkt er meer aan de hand te zijn. Daarnaast gaan er vreemde verhalen rond over een watergeest bij de Zwarte Kolk in het nabijgelegen Sterrebos.

Laufey Gísladóttir voelt zich nog altijd niet de oude na haar vorige avontuur. Haar pogingen om buiten het werk wat afleiding te zoeken lopen uit tot niets. Gelukkig gaat het werk voor haar beveiligingsbedrijf Islasec onverminderd door. Laufey en Niels worden door de directie van een dure internationale kostschool ingehuurd om de beveiliging in het gebouw op orde te krijgen. Terwijl Niels helpt om de digitale aanvallen op de website te stoppen, merkt Laufey al snel dat er op de Lochemse school vreemde zaken spelen.
