It's Saturday, the first day of the week. There is no silence. People are back to work after one day off. The air is not clean and beautiful. The sky is not clear and gleaming. The sun doesn't find the peaks of the mountains of Kabul clean and bright. The five million inhabitants of this great city do not feel as happy and free as before. There is no lull. No one can predict what will happen in a moment, a week or a year. Nothing is impossible in Afghanistan.

After being commissioned into the US Air Force, MJ Hegar was selected for pilot training by the Air National Guard, finished at the top of her class, then served three tours in Afghanistan flying combat search and rescue missions, culminating in a harrowing rescue attempt that would earn MJ the Purple Heart as well as the Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor Device. In Afghanistan there is a widespread practice of girls dressing as boys to play the role of a son. These children are called bacha posh: literally "girls dressed as boys." This practice offers families the freedom to allow their child to shop and work - and in some cases, it saves them from the disgrace of not having a male heir. But in adolescence, religion restores the natural law.
