It is Christmas Eve 1932, and the Kluger family are celebrating at home. Their only daughter Lexa is excited about her upcoming summer wedding to Moritz Weissmann, a promising young doctor. Lexa has many admirers, but her heart belongs to Moritz, who is initially welcomed by her parents and two brothers, Helmy and Erich. Above all, Panter-Downes portrays the changes and social revolutions which took place during wartime.

Hugh Densmore picks up a young hitchhiker on a deserted stretch of road. Though he initially takes pity on her, something doesn’t add up: her backstory is barely believable. Despite this, ‘Iris’ cunningly gets Hugh to take her all the way to Phoenix, then shows up at his motel the same evening hinting that she needs an abortion. Already unnerved, panic seizes Hugh when two officers show up to question him following reports of a girl’s body in a canal. Then comes a revelation which upends the entire novel.

Written in a hospital tent to the sound of gunfire and shells falling, Cicely Hamilton drew on her experiences working in France during WW1 to tell the story of William Tully and his new bride Griselda, who are wrenched away from their all-consuming interests – socialism and votes for women – and plunged into the almost dream-like horror of war.
