Six years after The Half-Drowned King, Ragnvald Eysteinsson is now king of Sogn, but fighting battles for King Harald keeps him away from home, as he confronts treachery and navigates a political landscape that grows more dangerous. Ragnvald’s sister Svanhild has found the adventure she craves at the side of the rebel explorer Solvi Hunthiofsson, though not without a cost. But when the captain of his ship tries to kill him on the way home from a raiding excursion, he must confront his stepfather's betrayal and find a way to protect his birthright. It is no easy feat in Viking-age Norway, where a hundred petty rulers kill over parcels of land, and a prophesied high king is rising.

Resté fidèle au roi Harald, le loup à la crinière d'or, Ragnvald de Møre peut compter sur sa sœur Svanhild pour l'aider à maintenir la paix dans le royaume. Mais cette dernière a soif de liberté. Lorsque sa fille est emmenée de force en Islande, Svanhild en profite pour reprendre la mer. Solvi, son amour de jeunesse, s'y est réfugié et elle espère le rejoindre.

Quant à sa petite sœur, l'impétueuse Svanhild, elle serait capable de prendre les armes pour lui venir en aide. Jusqu'au jour où elle croise le chemin du beau Solvi, l'ennemi juré de son frère.

Pour tous les amateurs d'Outlander ou de Game of Thrones ! Ragnvald de Møre règne désormais sur le comté de Sogn. Les batailles menées au nom du roi Harald de Norvège l'éloignent cependant la plupart du temps de ses terres, ce dont profitent certains de ses proches pour tenter d'affaiblir son pouvoir. Svanhild, sa soeur, mène quant à elle la vie aventureuse dont elle rêvait aux côtés de Solvi, ennemi juré de Ragnvald. Mais cette liberté à un prix.
