I have a glorious past full of achievement and renown. I mean, I feel like I must, right? The problem is, I can’t remember it. I can’t even remember my own name. I was found in a river, body mangled and face scarred, with nothing to identify me besides a single embroidered letter. My memory is a murky blur, but I have a quest, one that will give me back everything I’ve lost.

Und gerade als es nicht mehr schräger werden kann, beansprucht der schroffe und gut aussehende Feenkönig sie als seine Gefährtin. Ähm, was? Aber König Leander ist entschlossen, zu beweisen, dass sie vom Schicksal füreinander bestimmt sind, und weigert sich, Taylor gehen zu lassen. Angesichts der Gefahren, die in diesem fremden Land lauern, ist sein Schutz vielleicht gar nicht so schlecht. Und dieser brütende Blick und der perfekte Körper?

Der Abgrund ist voller Schrecken, aber die Minen sind nicht viel besser. Gareth begleitet mich auf Schritt und Tritt, beschützt mich und bereitet mir mehr Lust, als ich es für möglich gehalten hätte. Ich dachte, sobald wir die Minen erreicht haben, wäre unsere Reise zu Ende. Mit oder ohne Clotty würden wir in das Winterreich reisen und unser gemeinsames Leben beginnen, so wie ich es Gareth vor all den Monaten geschworen habe.

Der verschlagene Wechselbalg hat sich so tief unter meine Haut gegraben, dass ich nicht mehr atmen kann, ohne ihn zu spüren. Der kluge Mund des Mädchens ist eine ständige Versuchung, unser salziges Geplänkel ist wie raue Küsse in einem abgedunkelten Raum. Meine Gedanken sind gebrochen, und ich kann zugeben, dass ich besessen bin. Deshalb habe ich Beth auf Distanz gehalten. Ich traue mich nicht in ihre Nähe. Nicht, wenn ich ihre verwundete Seele in ihren Augen sehen kann, selbst wenn sie lacht.

Beth hat mich mit Versprechungen, die ein Feuer in meinem Herzen entfachen, in die Sklavenrebellion gelockt … und auch zu anderen Orten. Der Basar wird entweder zu einer Revolution führen oder mit unzähligen verlorenen Leben als eine noch größere Hochburg der Sklaverei enden. Darüber hinaus ist ein alter Feind aufgetaucht, und gegen ihn zu kämpfen wird mir jedes bisschen Kraft und Magie abverlangen, das ich besitze.

Beth an meiner Seite zu behalten erweist sich als weitaus schwieriger, als ich gedacht hatte. Schließlich konnte ich ihr nicht entkommen, als wir mit Leander und Taylor unterwegs waren. Sie verfolgte meine Schritte, huschte durch meine Träume und nahm all meine wachen Gedanken ein.

Der Feenkönig wächst mir ans Herz. Jede Berührung, jeder Blick und jede Nacht in seinen Armen schmelzen langsam meinen Widerstand. Wenn seine wilde Seite übernimmt, will etwas in mir loslassen und ihm alles geben. Mit jedem Tag, der vergeht, wird es immer schwieriger, die Anziehungskraft zu verleugnen. Aber der Weg ins Winterreich ist voller Gefahren, und ich muss mich darauf konzentrieren, den Weg nach Hause zu finden, nicht auf die lustvollen Versprechungen, die mir Leander nachts ins Ohr flüstert. Doch wie lange kann ich dem berauschenden Kuss des Winters widerstehen?
