The small lakeside town of Wolfhollow, New Hampshire is bustling with Fourth of July tourists. The week-long holiday festivities are interrupted when a valuable letter from the Revolutionary War is stolen from the town museum. Fourteen-year-old Leah Bartlett and her two siblings, eleven-year-old Avery and nine-year-old Grayson, jump in to solve this summer mystery. The local newspaper nicknamed the Bartlett children the Rucksack Kids for the canvas backpacks they each carry.

Clarke Simmons is an office manager for a major New York news agency. By day he sits in a cramped basement office organizing paper products and toner cartridges, but there is more to this mild-mannered employee than what people see at work. Clarke believes he is an alien sent to earth to save mankind.

As summer begins to wane, the Bartletts leave the lakeside community of Wolfhollow, New Hampshire to take a last minute vacation to the seashore. A half mile from the beach sits Mystery Island. This fog-enshrouded island happens to be the destination on a pirate treasure map the kids recently discovered. However, to find the buried treasure, fourteen-year-old Leah Bartlett and her two siblings, twelve-year-old Avery and nine-year-old Grayson, must decipher a secret code. .

Fall has come upon Wolfhollow, New Hampshire where the days are shorter and the nights cooler. Leah, Avery, and Grayson Bartlett have started back into the rhythm of their school year. However, a family friend asks the children to help him with a research project for an ancestor who traveled the historical Underground Railroad, with a stop near the Bartlett home in Wolfhollow, New Hampshire. What starts off as field trips to local museums turns into an adventure filled with an underground train, a snake pit, and a rope bridge over waterfalls.
