Two women and their children arrive in Clearmont in route to California. Mrs. Chambers is looking to reunite with her husband who has been off mining for gold, while Mrs. Larson is a recent widow whose husband died of a snake bite along the trail. The women are determined to press onward despite the onset of winter. So, Britt MacMasters, former US Marshal turned rancher, and his ranch-hand Rusty, offer to escort the party through hostile territory.

Meanwhile, Jacob returns to Clearmont having graduated college, but draws the ire of Cheyenne who is about to marry Laurel, but senses his fiancé may have eyes for the new lawyer instead. A death on a train sends Doc, Dawes, and Britt on the trail of a killer.

Five years have gone by since the devastation of the buffalo stampede hit Clearmont, and the three-part season opener titled "The Twisted Badge" puts Marshal Britt MacMasters in the most dangerous place he has ever been – the other side of the Law.
