Dr. Hawa Abdi, "the Mother Teresa of Somalia" and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, is the founder of a massive camp for internally displaced people located a few miles from war-torn Mogadishu, Somalia. Since 1991, when the Somali government collapsed, famine struck, and aid groups fled, she has dedicated herself to providing help for people whose lives have been shattered by violence and poverty.

For the last 20 years, Dr. Hawa Abdi and her daughters have run a refugee camp on their family farm not far from war-torn Mogadishu, which has grown to shelter 90,000 displaced Somalis: men, women, and children whose lives have been shattered by violence and poverty and who are in urgent need of medical attention. She founded a one-room clinic in 1983, but then the Somalian government collapsed, famine struck and aid groups fled. So she allowed displaced people to find refuge on her 1300 acres of farmland.
