Tip, a young Gillikin boy, runs away from his cruel guardian, the wicked witch Mombi. He meets up with the Scarecrow, now ruler of the Emerald City; the Tin Woodman; many new friends; and an army of girls who want to overthrow the Scarecrow. Before it's over, Tip finds out that he is part of a dark secret from Oz's past.

The Road to Oz is the fifth Oz book. In this book, Dorothy and Toto are off again on an exciting adventure down the road to Oz. In order to help the Shaggy Man, Dorothy and Toto must journey through magical and mysterious lands. Soon the three are joined by a lost boy named Button-Bright and the beautiful young Polychrome, the Rainbow's Daughter.

On an ocean voyage with her uncle Henry to Australia, Dorothy is blown into the sea by a storm. She takes refuge on a floating chicken-coop, which washes ashore, along with the coop and a hen in it. The hen is able to speak; Dorothy gives it the name "Billina". Exploring the land, Dorothy and Billina are menaced by a tribe of brightly dressed "Wheelers", who have wheels instead of hands and feet.

Cap'n Bill and Trot journey to Oz and, with the help of the Scarecrow, the former ruler of Oz, overthrow the villainous King Krewl of Jinxland. Cap'n Bill and Trot had previously appeared in two other novels by Baum, The Sea Fairies and Sky Island. Based in part upon the 1914 silent film, His Majesty, the Scarecrow of Oz. One day a young girl, Trot, encounters a strange young boy with a big umbrella. She learns his name is Button Bright and he uses this umbrella to go on long journeys. Trot's friend, Cap'n Bill, joins the two children and they venture to a fantastical island, which they call Sky Island, as it is halfway in the sky.
