NBC University Theater initially started in Chicago with a remit to bring adaptations of classic novels, usually Anglo-American, to a radio audience. In its later years, it also included short stories and plays and went on to win the distinguished Peabody award. University Theater relied on excellent distillations of the novels and first-class acting alongside high production values.

L'intrigue couvre les aventures d'un pauvre gentilhomme, dénommé Alonso Quichano, obsédé par les livres de chevalerie. Ceux-ci lui troublent la cervelle au point que Quichano se prend pour le chevalier errant Don Quichotte, dont la mission est de parcourir l'Espagne pour combattre le mal et protéger les opprimés. Il prend la route, monté sur son vieux cheval, Rossinante, et accompagné d'un paysan simplet, Sancho Panza, trompé par ses promesses de récompense extraordinaire.

Nachdem ihre gute Mahlzeit geendigt war, stiegen sie wieder auf, und ohne dass ihnen etwas der Erzählung Würdiges zustieß, erreichten sie am folgenden Tage die Schenke, die den Sancho Pansa in Furcht und Schrecken setzte, in welche er aber dennoch einkehren musste, so ungern er es auch tat.

Im ersten Buch dieser Historie verließen wir den tapferen Biscayer und den berühmten Don Quixote mit aufgehobenen blanken Schwertern, beabsichtigend, zwei mörderische Hiebe zu geben, die, wenn sie vollwichtig fielen, sie gewiss bis auf den Sattelknopf teilen und zerspalten und sie wie Granatäpfel entzweischneiden mussten. In diesem furchtbaren Momente stand die treffliche Geschichte still und brach ab, ohne dass uns der Autor einige Nachricht gegeben hätte, wo man das Mangelnde antreffen könne.

In einem Dorfe von la Mancha, dessen Namen ich mich nicht entsinnen mag, lebte unlängst ein Edler, einer von denen, die eine Lanze auf dem Vorplatz haben, einen alten Schild, einen dürren Klepper und einen Jagdhund. Eine Olla, mehr von Rind- als Hammelfleisch, des Abends gewöhnlich kalte Küche, des Sonnabends arme Ritter und freitags Linsen, sonntags aber einige gebratene Tauben zur Zugabe verzehrten drei Vierteile seiner Einnahme.

Der weise Cide Hamete Benengeli erzählt, dass Don Quixote, nachdem er von seinen Wirten und allen übrigen, die bei dem Begräbnisse des Schäfers Chrysostomus gegenwärtig waren, Abschied genommen, sich mit seinem Stallmeister in dasselbe Gebüsch wandte, in welchem sich die Schäferin Marcella verloren hatte. Als er länger als zwei Stunden nach allen Seiten suchend herum gestreift war, ohne sie zu finden, hielten sie auf einer Wiese an, die frisches Gras bedeckte und durch die ein frischer, so angenehmer Bach floss, welches sie einlud und nötigte, hier die Stunden der Siesta zuzubringen, welche schon mit der größten Hitze einzutreten begann.

So endigte der Gefangene seine Erzählung, und Don Fernando sagte: »Wahrlich, Herr Kapitän, die Art, wie Ihr Eure Begebenheiten erzählt habt, ist so, dass sie dem Wunderbaren der Geschichte selber gleichkömmt; alles ist höchst seltsam und voller Zufälle, die den Zuhörer in Erstaunen setzen, und das Vergnügen, welches wir im Anhören empfunden haben, ist so groß, dass, wenn uns auch der Morgen in dieser Erzählung überraschen sollte, wir uns doch freuen würden, wenn sie von neuem anfinge.«
