The world's first and longest magical fantasy HOSHRUBA (1883-1893) was compiled in the Urdu language in Lucknow by two of its greatest story-tellers, Syed Muhammad Husain Jah and Ahmed Husain Qamar, wrote a fantasy in the Urdu language whose equal had not been heard before, and which has never been rivaled since. It was called Tilism-e Hoshruba. The writers claimed that the tale had been passed down to them from storytellers going back centuries: It was a part of the beloved oral epic, The Adventures of Amir Hamza which had come to the Indian subcontinent via Persia.

Ibn-e-Insha, real name Sher Muhammad Khan, born on June 15, 1927, died on January 11, 1978, was a Leftist Urdu poet, humorist, travelogue writer, and columnist. He is regarded as one of the best humorists in Urdu. His writing has a distinctive diction laced with language reminiscent of Amir Khusro in its use of words and construction. He was associated with several governmental services including Radio Pakistan, Ministry of Culture, and National Book Centre of Paksitan.

Shafiq-ur-Rahman (November 9, 1920-March 19, 2000) was a Pakistani humorist and a short story writer in Urdu. He was a medical doctor by profession and served in the Pakistan army. He received Hilal-e-Imtiaz for his military and civilian services. Rahman's work added a new dimension to humour in Urdu literature. It is noted in the anthology of Ismat stories that Ismat Chughtai wrote two versions of the same story, Kallu. After writing the first version, she presented it to a peer for a review. Both she and her peer forgot about this exchange. Perhaps she was preoccupied with the characters and plot, as she proceeded to write the Kallu narrative yet again.

About the author: Krishan Chander (1914-1977) was an Urdu/Hindi writer of short stories and novels. He was a prolific writer, penning over 20 novels, 30 collections of short stories and scores of radio plays in Urdu and later, after partition of the country, took to writing mainly in Hindi. He also wrote screenplays for Bollywood movies to supplement his meager income as an author of satirical stories. Krishan Chander's novels have been translated into over 16 Indian languages and some foreign languages, including English.

The 18th century has probably been the most controversial in India's history of the last thousand years.
