"The unknown masterpiece", or "Le chef-d'œuvre inconnu", is a story by the French author Honoré de Balzac. This short text was of tremendous importance in the world of art, for it holds a groundbreaking reflection about artistic creation: what does completion or failure mean, and how is it that technique does not guarantee either. Paul Cézanne famously said "I am Frenhofer", identifying with the old master around which the story revolves. Pablo Picasso himself was absolutely fascinated by the text, so much that he had his studio moved in the Parisian street named in the story; there, he painted his own masterpiece, Guernica.

El hecho de que el inquilino en la casa de huespedes de Vauquer, Goriot tenga todo el aspecto de un hombre pobre y abandonado por la fortuna no le impide alardear de que sus dos hijas son, respectivamente una duquesa y una baronesa. C'est le premier portrait de femme profondément destructrice, rancunière et laide que Balzac ait produit. Elle se voit apparentée à un animal malfaisant : "ses sourcils épais réunis par un bouquet, sa face longue et simiesque laissent deviner derrière la paysanne des Vosges un caractère de sauvage". Et c'est bien d'une sauvage dont il s'agit. La cousine est animée d'une rage et d'une passion impuissante. Telle une araignée tissant sa toile, elle gaspille une énergie folle à nuire sans recueillir les fruits de ses intrigues, pourtant patiemment élaborées.

Una bellísima cortesana, casi adolescente y enamorada, un poeta-vividor, también enamorado, y un ex convicto serán los personajes centrales de esta novela que, aunque escrita con estilo irregular, corrobora una vez más el genio creativo del autor -aglutinador de psicologías y entornos sociales-, capaz de captar la complejidad universal, pasada y presente, de la condición humana.

"Sarrasine" (1830) is a novella by Honoré de Balzac, part of his Comédie Humaine. The stage is set around midnight during a ball, the narrator is sitting at a window. There is an unknown old man around the house, whom the family was oddly devoted to, and who frightened and intrigued the partygoers. When the man sits next to the narrator's guest, Beatrix Rochefide, she touches him, and the narrator rushes her out of the room. The narrator knows who the man is and says he will tell her his story the next evening.

The spoiled son of a Spanish nobleman, Don Juan Belvidero cannot wait for the moment to claim the family wealth and title for himself. Par cette fresque aux allures de roman policier, Balzac dépeint et fustige les incohérences sociales, politiques et judiciaires de son époque. Paru sous forme de feuilleton entre 1838 et 1847, "Splendeurs et misères des courtisanes" est un roman foisonnant de personnages hauts en couleur mêlant intrigues amoureuses et policières dans le Paris interlope du XIXème siècle. Le jeune et beau Lucien, monté à la capitale avec des ambitions littéraires sera confronté aux milieux du crime et de la prostitution, tombera sous l'emprise d'un ancien bagnard.

"La femme de trente ans" évoque la condition féminine au travers du récit d'un mariage qui échoue. Julie de Chastillon est une jeune femme poussée trop vite dans le mariage et en quête permanente d'une rencontre amoureuse digne d'être vécue, elle devient adultère. Entre les déceptions dans l'intimité conjugale et le devoir de garder les apparences en société, Balzac nous fait le récit parfaitement réaliste d'une jeune femme "à qui le mariage ne [...] réussit point".

Ce roman fait partie des "Scènes de la vie parisienne" dans la section "Les Parents pauvres" tout comme "La Cousine Bette". Pons, musicien sans fortune, bon et naïf, est traité en parent pauvre par sa riche famille, les Camusot de Marville. Le jour où ils découvrent que la collection d'objets d'art qu'il a accumulée est d'une immense valeur, ils le dépouillent et le font mourir.

The Unknown Masterpiece is set in 17th-century Paris and revolves around the artist Frenhofer and his relationship with two younger artists, Nicolas Poussin and Frans Pourbus, one of whom is inspired by Frenhofer’s legendary work and seeks his mentorship. In una Parigi dominata dalla brama di denaro e di potenza, il giovane studente Eugène de Rastignac viene iniziato ai segreti del bel mondo. Ospite della pensione di madame Vauquer, scopre l'ipocrisia che si cela dappertutto, dietro l'amicizia, l'amore, la pietà, il matrimonio, sotto lo splendore aristocratico come nella mediocrità borghese. Capisce che il prezzo da pagare per aver successo è quello di sacrificare i propri ideali e le illusioni giovanili.

At the beginning of the story the heroine lives an unfulfilled life in rural France, her nature crushed by a domineering and miserly father. Gallant cousin Charles arrives and acts as a catalyst on Eugénie's personality and emotions. Will her love survive the strong self-opinion of the young man and the selfishness of her father or is Eugénie's reward destined to be in heaven?

Le père d'Eugénie Grandet a été tonnelier. Grâce à un sens aigu des affaires et une grande avarice, il a réussi à faire fortune en profitant des événements de cette époque instable. Autrefois maire de Saumur, il fait maintenant fructifier sa grande fortune tout en faisant croire à sa femme et à sa fille qu'ils ne sont pas bien riches. Les habitants de Saumur, plus au courant de la fortune du père Grandet, voient en sa fille Eugénie le plus beau parti de la ville et la courtisent donc ardemment.

Un joven desilusionado de la vida recibe como regalo una piel de zapa, que le concedera todos sus deseos, pero cada vez que eso sucede, la piel se vuelve mas pequena y cuando ella desaparezca, el joven morira.

Dans "La Peau de chagrin", un de ses premiers romans à coloration fantastique, Balzac nous dévoile le mythe sans doute le plus central dans "La Comédie Humaine"...

Our ‘fight of flight’ response is something hardwired into the primitive part of our brain. Our need to survive, to outlive whatever danger poses, that immediate threat to our lives is little short of a marvel. Everything else is abandoned in order to survive. Whilst in modern times that ability has been somewhat modified and ‘reasoned’ away to an extent, in past years it’s what usually kept you alive. Una de las novelas mas impresionantes de su ciclo "La comedia humana", y considerada por muchos como su obra maestra, en Eugenia Grandet, Balzac pinto un retrato inolvidable y elocuente de un avaro a quien nada le importa ni tiene escrupulo alguno con alguien, ni siquiera con su hija, con tal de aumentar sus riquezas.
