First published between 1870 and 1893, Émile Zola’s 20-book cycle chronicling four generations of the Rougon-Macquarts was a shocking exposé of the decadence, degradation and moral decay of 19th-century France. It included some of his greatest novels, among them his masterpiece, Germinal. These innovative, ambitious dramas, first broadcast on Radio 4 over 24 hours in 2015-16, are a radical reimagining of Zola’s classic series, introducing us to 104-year-old matriarch, Dide, imprisoned in an asylum in southern France.

Zola’s La Terre (The Earth) proved highly controversial on publication in 1887 and still retains the power to shock. It follows the fortunes of the Fouan family in the years leading up to the Franco-Prussian War. Old Fouan, the patriarch, draws up a legal contract to divide his farmland between his three children in exchange for an allowance that will support him and his wife through a comfortable retirement.

Toute acquise à Napoléon III dans le passé, grâce aux intrigues politiques de la famille Rougon, la petite ville de Plassans est maintenant sous le contrôle des légitimistes. Prêtre Bonapartiste, l'abbé Faujas, est envoyé de Besançon pour tenter de faire revenir la ville dans le droit chemin. Il est hébergé dans un premier temps par la famille Mouret. Il y a là François Mouret, quarante-cinq ans (fils d'Ursule Macquart) commerçant en retraite, sa femme Marthe Rougon et ses enfants, Octave, Serge et Désirée.

Octave Mouret (le futur héros du "Bonheur des dames"), débarque à Paris et devient le nouveau locataire d'un immeuble bourgeois de six étages, situé rue de Choiseul. Il découvre rapidement que dans cette demeure en apparence de réputation irréprochable, les intrigues font partie de la vie courante des habitants. Derrière une belle façade se dissimule une cour intérieure d'où émanent des odeurs nauséabondes dues aux détritus des cuisines que les domestiques jettent par les fenêtres. Et par analogie, derrière cette respectable façade, existe un puant cloaque moral.

La spéculation, telle qu'elle se pratique de nos jours, naît sous le Second Empire. Aristide Rougon, dit Saccard, le promoteur immobilier de "La Curée", réapparait ici en conquérant de la finance.Le "jeu" capitaliste enflamme les passions des grandes fortunes comme des classes laborieuses. Zola démonte le mécanisme des opérations boursières et scrute les personnages typiques du milieu de l'argent.

À la suite de la mort de son épouse, Jean Macquart, désespéré, personnage principal de "La Terre", reprend du service dans l'armée. Incorporé dans le 106e de ligne, il y est caporal. Ses hommes le respectent. Lors de la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870, il ne peut qu'assister impuissant à l'effondrement de l'Empire et à la déroute de ses armées.

Dans le train qui mène au Havre, un couple poignarde sauvagement un notable du régime impérial, avant de le jeter sur la voie. À la Croix-de-Maufras, lieu dit reculé, un garde-barrière empoisonne son épouse, dans l'espoir de mettre enfin la main sur son magot.
