Selma Falck vaknar naken i en brinnande stuga på kalfjället. Hon minns ingenting, hon vet inte var hon är eller hur hon kommit dit. Mörbultad och skadad lyckas hon ta sig ut och ser stugan brinna ner till grunden. Fjällvärlden är helt öde, inga hus och inte en människa i närheten.
