Tief unten in den Katakomben der Pariser Oper lebt das »Phantom der Oper«, eine düstere Gestalt mit entstelltem Antlitz und scheinbar übersinnlichen Kräften. Niemand hat es je zu Gesicht bekommen, und dennoch dirigiert es auf geheimnisvolle Weise das Bühnengeschehen. Vor allem die junge Sängerin Christine Daée gerät immer mehr unter den Einfluss des sagenumwobenen Wesens. Als ihr Geliebter versucht, seine Angebetete aus den Händen des Phantoms zu retten, beginnen sich die Ereignisse zu überschlagen.
