  • The woman who helped make tampons safer, with Nancy King Reame
    Mar 18 2026

Nancy King Reame, Professor Emerita at Columbia University's School of Nursing, has spent decades researching tampon safety. She was on the FDA task force that investigated the link between tampons and toxic shock syndrome in the early eighties - a deadly outbreak that killed dozens of women and affected hundreds more. Her research led to the absorbency scale printed on every box of tampons sold. Nancy King Reame says even today, we still don't fully know what goes into a tampon.

Nancy Reame is the Mary Dickey Lindsay Professor of Health Promotion, Risk Reduction (Emerita), at the Columbia University School of Nursing. This episode covers:

-The history of toxic shock syndrome and its link to tampon absorbency in the 1980s

-How tampons are still tested using a synthetic vagina and blue-dyed salt water — not menstrual fluid

-Why we don't know the specifics of what goes into a tampon

  • Cesarean births: the surgery that changes everything, with Helena Grant and Rachel Somerstein
    Mar 3 2026

Cesarean births are one of the most common operations in the world, and yet, we know surprisingly little about the impact and legacy of this surgery in our bodies.

Host Golda Arthur had two emergency cesarean births, and 20 years later, she's still making sense of their legacy. In this episode, she sits down with Rachel Somerstein, author of Invisible Labor: The Untold Story of the Cesarean Section, and Helena Grant, president of New York Midwives, to talk about why cesarean births are overlooked.

    They discuss:

    - The origin of this surgery, which in the United States was first practiced on enslaved women.

    - Why the rate of c-sections is so high in the US.

    - Why recovery takes far longer than anyone tells you.

    - What to know if you’re pregnant, or trying to have a baby, and want to know more about cesarean births.

    Jan 15 2026
