We sat down with six amazing guests throughout the day, and what started as a day of remembrance turned into hours of completely unscripted conversations with Navy SEALs, cops, veterans, bikers, contractors, entrepreneurs, and enough old school Imperial Beach stories to explain why all these guys earned their liberty risk title. In Part 1, former Navy SEAL turned cop and helicopter pilot Elias Rodriguez joins Ryan to revisit the night they first met more than 20 years ago, when Elias responded to a house-party brawl involving SEALs, cops, a Dirty Harry sized revolver, and Joel Lambert screaming from a balcony. Elias also takes us inside some of the wildest moments of his 26-year law-enforcement career, from a police chase with $250,000 in cash flying across the freeway to an officer-down manhunt he'll never forget. Then Ye Olde Plank owners Marty and Big Tony sit down to condense decades of Big Navy, Frogman, contracting, bar-fight, and Imperial Beach history, including the legendary palm tree where unconscious patrons apparently went to recover. From Navy stories and bar fights to drug-money chases, questionable statute-of-limitations confessions, and some legendary characters from IB's past, this one goes everywhere. But underneath all the chaos is the reason everyone was there in the first place: remembering the 30 Americans lost aboard Extortion 17 on August 6, 2011. And we're not done. Freddie Joe Farnsworth has spent the last 30+ years making Hollywood's wars look real, and unlike most people on a movie set telling actors how to be soldiers, Freddie learned it the old-fashioned way. Before Hollywood, he was a Marine infantryman who fought in Desert Storm under James Mattis, crossed into Kuwait the day after his daughter was born, operated around the burning oil fields, took POWs, and somehow even crossed paths with General Norman Schwarzkopf. Then he got out of the Marines and stumbled into an entirely different kind of chaos. A background role on Starship Troopers put him in front of legendary military advisor Dale Dye, which eventually turned into actor training, horse wrangling, stunt work, stunt coordinating, second-unit directing, and a career spanning some of the biggest war movies and TV shows ever made. Freddie takes us behind the scenes of Band of Brothers, The Pacific, 13 Hours, World War Z, Spy Game, 12 Strong, Jack Ryan, Overlord, Deadwood, Captain America and more, with stories involving Brad Pitt, John Krasinski, Colin Farrell, Jared Leto, Martin Scorsese, Tony Scott and J.J. Abrams. We get into the tricks Hollywood uses to build massive battlefields, putting actors through real military-style boot camps, horse stunts gone sideways, fighting with productions over authenticity, and the tiny details veterans notice immediately when a movie gets them wrong. There are also some great lessons on leadership, stunt work, Hollywood egos, taking care of the lowest guy on the call sheet, and why Freddie treats a $3 million movie with the same intensity as a $300 million blockbuster. And then there's Primitive War, his latest project, which is essentially American troops fighting dinosaurs in Vietnam. Because apparently regular war movies weren't dangerous enough. Marc joins us to tell the story of getting signed as a band straight out of high school, life on the Warped Tour, watching the record industry implode during the Napster era, and what it was like suddenly becoming known more as Avril Lavigne's boyfriend than for his own music. And naturally, things get weird. There's a run-in with Adam Levine and Maroon 5, a legendary musician allegedly trying to kiss him, Jared Leto being Jared Leto, an Australian tour involving a man fighting a tree because he thought it was a kangaroo, and a fight with Sum 41's lead singer over Paris Hilton's car that somehow keeps coming back throughout the episode. But Marc's story gets a lot more interesting after the music stops. He talks about deliberately walking away at the height of his career, building a new life in San Diego real estate, surviving three near-death experiences, raising daughters, entrepreneurship, failure, money, masculinity, and why he's spent most of his life operating without a Plan B. We also get into record deals and music royalties, 1031 exchanges, building apartments in North Park, launching Tiger's Blood beverage, and the mindset that took him from touring musician to serial entrepreneur.
