Here’s the gist, human. Nothing new here. Who doesn’t have anxiety, who doesn’t work hard to not worry and perpetuate more of it in the process? For so many of us, that is an ongoing rhetorical state of mind. We don’t even need to answer. We know it’s true.

Let’s call anxiety exactly what it is. Let’s name it to God. A petition of the heart. That we take it to him, and let him measure the depth of our anxiety against the scope of its reach in our life. Because our God is sovereign.

Here’s the gist, human. The young, ambitious Peter, and the young, skeptical James grew up, spiritually. From baby Christians, eye witnesses of our Savior on earth, to spiritual leaders and two voices that prompt us to grow toward God by living a life that represents his truth on our ground.

The simple scripture-based exercise in e175, e176, and now e177 is meant to call out my faith, your faith and how it is defined by our spiritual maturity in action.

God’s Word illuminates his faithfulness by what I do. There is no substitute for God’s Word. I love immersing in it and letting God’s spirit speak.

My faith is defined by my spiritual maturity in action, his truth on my ground. God’s Word illuminates his faithfulness by what I do.

So I have an answer for how much clearer God needs to be

He is perfectly clear.

And I have a response. Grow up, human.

Here’s the gist, human. Peter’s first letter is impassioned, truth-seared, and glorious. It comes from his experiences, that he has lived his life trading measure for measure, that what he does in action, will receive a reciprocal spiritual strengthening. That spiritual maturity is embracing the glory-bound spiritual gain of things. His life convinces us of this: that a full investment in our obedience yields the highest spiritual return.

We can’t not hear Peter.

My faith is defined by my spiritual maturity in action, my truth on the ground. God’s Word illuminates my faith by what I do.

So I ask us, “how much clearer does God need to be?

Here’s the gist, human. So James had been sharing the Gospel for 10+ years and Peter for 30+ years at the time they wrote their letters.

What strikes me about these letters is the maturity of James and Peter. They both offer wisdom that comes from one place: living in the middle of hard-fought truth on the ground. How to be obedient, the mind battles that fight us, the attributes of God to lay hold of, and the urgency of every moment, tempered with an assurance about how one should act to walk with Jesus.

Because they both fought hard to establish and sustain the early church on the way, truth and life of Jesus Christ.

They would know.

We should listen.

Here’s the gist, human. Amos had a harsh message about God’s sovereignty for the Israelites in the Northern Kingdom. For us, while we are focusing on his sovereignty we can pray for hearts that see him. For us it is waking up in a mindset of preparation, in fact, asking God to prepare your mind to meet him in that day. Because he will show up. Amos tells us that our God will reveal his thoughts.

Not unlike God turning from the wind gust he just sent across the Rockies to tell me something I need to know and obey. When God guides you through the Holy Spirit, imagine all the ways he is simultaneously sustaining and directing others and his creation.

Because he is sovereign. This tells me there is only one direction to look. Up. Your vertical status with God has everything to do with your horizontal status in your earthly life. Mine too.

Here’s the gist, human. If you want to transform your spiritual life, how about a solo row with God? A solo row is a journey that you cannot do without God, without Jesus, without the Holy Spirit. Seems like a paradox, doesn’t it? But it’s really such a defining truth, that when we accept that our relationship with our Maker is 100% up to our free will and his glorious nature we head for much deeper water. A solo row that is between you and God, destined for a new spiritual horizon. Spiritual sea legs. Amazing. It takes a day to day commitment to our conviction, our confidence in God. And the world he made for us to live in.

Consider Taryn. The first American woman to compete in the World’s Toughest Row as a solo athlete. On day 34, at sunrise, Taryn witnessed a whale do a vertical jump in front of her. An image that will live on in her heart as a divine metaphor for her WHY.

Courage in action. Conviction that is contagious. Tracking this kind of courage is a lesson we can’t ignore, and the beauty of it, the power of it, is that she has been rowing for 40+ days and at any point of my day I can stop and know this:

Taryn is on that boat, rowing.

Here’s the gist, human. God is on the lookout for plots, schemes, the human intrigue of others plotting against our spiritual growth. I have been asking myself the same questions all week. Why do I want to take a closer look at, get up close and personal with Psalm 31, verse 20? What is really going on inside this verse? Why do I feel compelled to bring this to my listeners, in our pursuit of knowing God more deeply?

I do it because when someone or something captures my attention I should stake a claim on my time, my value, my worth in God’s kingdom. I should picture it in my mind’s eye as the ascent to the Mt. Everest in my heart. It’s that important.

Because attention is one of the few offerings we bring to God.

Here’s the gist, human. When we encounter trouble, it may start with well-lit enemies but inevitably draws who David names as “neighbors” and “closest friends.” This tells me that our human nature is the common denominator of adversity, that the trust we have must be anchored in God’s character. By this, that all humans fall to adversity without him. The thing we fall prey to bares little difference from enemies to neighbors to friends. Everyone gets pulled under without God. The evil of our enemies embraces the ambiguity within our neighbors and friends to coax them over the line into betrayal. Human nature has a betrayal gene. It clings to everyone, everything that is not-God, all of life that keeps us from God.

So what does David do? How does he beckon God’s presence? The power of Psalm 31 today, to show how the psalms of the shepherd turned king can be a praise trail we walk to find clarity in the middle of life’s confusion.
