  • Summary

  • As the world watches, Joan enters the final stretch of LA streets - the LA Coliseum in the distance, filled to capacity. But the pack behind Joan has splintered and the chase is on. As in life, the twists in the marathon mean that victory is never sure. The journey is the real story, and for Joan, her Olympic competitors, and the pioneer women runners, it required grit, courage, and stamina to go the distance.

Memory Lane

I was immersed in the past as I listened and recalled so many details of this book. My running began for personal reasons in 1978. In the very early 80’s I was honored to meet Joanie outside a room where she had spoke in Grand Rapids Michigan the evening before a 25k. So soft spoken and kind. I will always remember watching the Olympic marathon in absolute amazement as she entered the stadium. This book gives very extensive coverage of facts about women’s running and by combining Joanie’s story it couldn’t be more complete!

So inspiring!!

Love the memoir and history lesson of this piece. Joan Benoit Samuelson was a legend then and remains so with her ability, her drive, her spirit and her determination. Loved how this story was arranged and the narration of it with her and fellow pioneers in woman’s running sharing their journey with us.

A masterpiece….for all lovers of running

I am a marathon runner…it’s been 13 years since my last marathon (my 16th), but listening to this story took me right back to my training days and love for this race. My Dad was a sports writer for the Tacoma News Tribune when he covered the 1984 Olympics…and in his 40+ years of covering so many amazing sporting events, he ranks the witnessing of Joan Benoit winning the first ever women’s Olympic Marathon as his #1 greatest of all time.

Loved Every Minute

I’ve been running for the better part of 40 years. As a young runner, I had a poster of Joan at the Olympics in my bedroom, not having an idea of the historical significance of the race. I am grateful to all of the women who competed so that I could compete, and now my daughters complete. We still have a long way to go, so let’s keep on running, and keep on supporting each other.

Inspirational

A well written and performed story of women’s running. I enjoyed hearing the runners’ perspective of the struggles they overcame as well as the thoughts of those who cheered them on.

Great triumph for Women Runners

A great story of the advancement of women runners over the last 100+ years to get to the first Women’s Olympic Marathon in 1984.
All of this due to the amazing bravery of many woman runners of the past across the world.
