Beyond Success is a podcast for people who have achieved enough to see that achievement is not the full answer. Its listeners have built careers, companies, wealth, and lives others admire. But success has left important things unresolved: love, intimacy, connection, meaning, legacy. A sense of what all of it is finally for. This podcast addresses that problem at the level it deserves... and makes the case most listeners haven't heard: the inner life is what shapes the outer one. What you build next, who you build it with, and what your life ends up adding up to are produced by what's been worked through under the surface. This inner work is what produces the satisfaction, fulfillment, and joy that achievement alone was never going to deliver... and a clearer answer to what the next decade is for. I'm David Tian, Private Adviser to founders, leaders, and high achievers on the inner life of success. My background is in philosophy, psychology, and deep therapeutic work. I was a tenure-track philosophy professor at the National University of Singapore, with a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and fellowships from Harvard and Princeton. I'm also a Certified IFS Therapy Practitioner (Level 3) and a Brown University Certified Leadership Coach. In this podcast, I draw on Asian philosophy, modern psychology, and two decades of work with accomplished people who have achieved a great deal and still do not know what should come next. We examine the questions that remain when ambition has done its job and still left a gap. What a good life requires. What is worth wanting. What love is and what love asks of a person. What kind of inner life can support responsibility, deep attachment, and moral clarity. And how the inner work that resolves these questions also shapes the outer life it's pointed at. This is not a podcast about just getting more done. Instead, it's about understanding what success can give, what it cannot, and what the inner work of the next chapter actually requires. If success has started to feel incomplete, this podcast will help you make sense of what should come next. • #88: Why Hitting Your Next Number Never Works
    May 15 2026

You set a number for yourself a long time ago. You meant it. You told yourself, when I cross this line, I will know I am ok.

You crossed it. But you do not feel ok.

You are not poor. Not even close. But you still cannot sit still.

There is a story behind the thing that keeps driving you, and that story was handed to you before you were old enough to question it. It told you your worth was something countable. It taught you to measure yourself by your output, and to measure the people you care about by their output. So they measured you back.

This episode walks you through where the story came from, what it has been doing to your nervous system, and why no further amount of money will turn it off.

Listen before the next twenty years cost you even more of what the last twenty already did.

    Show Highlights Include:

    • The insidious "3 M Story" that was sold to you before you could read that's behind your inability to sit still after achieving your goals (0:37)

    • The "Tyranny of Merit" idea coined by a Harvard philosopher that can help you "get" why winning in life leaves you empty (2:46)

    • How to better understand your nervous system so you can be its ally instead of its enemy (5:19)

    • 2 brutal truths that indicate your nervous system is running a toxic pattern when you reach your goals (7:20)

    • Why you only seem to attract romantic partners who seem like they pick you because of your material success instead of genuine connection (8:55)

    • What to do after realizing you've spent 15 years of your life for 45 minutes of relief to unlock a new sense of deep peace (14:33)

    • A new take on The Parable of the Talents from the Gospel of Matthew that might help your nervous system let go of deep-seated fear (even if you're not religious) (15:28)

    • The "3 Blades" of the toxic pattern that secretly runs the most successful people (and how noticing these blades empowers you to pick a new pattern) (19:16)

  • #87: The Reason Achievement Never Made You Feel Loved
    May 8 2026

There is a certain irony in your situation, visible only if you step back far enough.

You have spent your entire adult life getting very good at one particular skill: earning. It built the career, the bank account, the reputation. Then you walked into the one room in life where earning stops working — love — and wondered why your strategy had failed you.

Your strategy didn't fail. It's just that the room is now different.

Underlying all of it is one contract, signed before you could read, and honoured every day since. The contract says you must earn love. But love, the real kind, cannot be earned. And you will never know it — with a partner, an ageing parent, an old friend — until you face the foundation beneath.

A part of you, learned long ago, believes you are not worthy of love. But you are. Your existence is the proof.

This episode shows you why every relationship has ended the same way. It names the capacity that carries you through any loss, any failure, any pain an intimate life will eventually bring. And it shows you what the right foundation actually is, and how to lay it.

Retire the contract. Before you sign it once more on a marriage certificate.

    Listen now.

    Show Highlights Include:

    • The one capacity you must build if you want a fulfilling intimate life (and why you don't need the right partner, the right circumstances, or the right timing to start cultivating this skill) (0:26)

    • Why you don't have a dating problem or a finding the right partner problem (even though the real problem wears both of these masks to deceive you) (1:35)

    • How to stop carrying the baggage of a lack of self-worth that will cripple every relationship you have until you're fed up with feeling empty inside (2:10)

    • Why finding the right partner fundamentally cannot help you feel worthy of love (2:45)

    • The insidious "disease acting like the cure" trap you're falling into in relationships and in therapy that will take you further from a fulfilling intimate life as it pretends to bring you closer (3:30)

    • How greeting cards and pop songs have warped your perception of love and actually has made it harder to find unconditional love (4:57)

    • The precise psychological process of how your nervous system learned you're not worthy (and how a seemingly innocent memory can control every aspect of your adult life) (8:52)

    • How to help your nervous system know that you carry a worth that no resume and no failure could ever take away (11:25)

    • Why changing just one word in your vocabulary can almost mystically open up a new door in your life: one that leads to unconditional love (18:40)

  • #86: The Parts of You That Cannot Love
    May 1 2026

Every high achiever I've worked with says he wants deeper connection. Almost none of them understand what it actually costs.

In this episode, I show you the one move most achievers unconsciously resist making. The move that changes how every close relationship in their life works — their oldest friends, the family they came from, the family they have not yet built, and the one they have with themselves.

What I'm about to describe is not a technique, but a reorientation. A technique is something you add to the list of things you already do. A reorientation asks you to stop doing something you have built your whole life around. So let me say this up front. Nothing in this episode is hard to understand. Everything in it is hard to do.

We cover the hidden ledger most achievers carry into every relationship without knowing it. The Confucian discipline of compassion, which is very different from softness. The young part of you that was sent away around seven years old. And what courage actually looks like in an intimate conversation, which has almost nothing to do with what you think.

If the people you want closest to you feel like they're actually far away, this is the episode for you.

    Show Highlights Include:

    • The sneaky way your professional success starves your most important relationships (1:08)

    • The #1 deathbed regret achievers have (and how to prevent this lonely reality from ruining your final moments) (3:06)

    • 3 myths about connection that, if left unaddressed, will cause you to be isolated and alone for the vast majority of your life (3:45)

    • The "love as a salary" mistake you're making in your personal life (and why it's difficult, if not impossible, to realize you're doing this) (8:47)

    • Why sitting in pain without rushing to a solution is the single hardest (and most important) thing you'll ever learn to do (10:43)

    • How your rushing to a solution your partner has is a classic case of avoidance (even though it doesn't feel like it) (12:16)

    • Why it feels like every relationship you build has a false floor in its foundation (15:44)

    • The insidious "Inner Burden" trap that forces you to pass on your biggest shortcomings to those around you and make them pay the cost you refused to pay (17:44)

    • 3 characteristics of intimate courage and why they look like anything but courageous from the outside looking in (18:29)

    • A real life example of how romantic partners get the ick when they feel like you're optimizing your dating life (and how one of my private clients broke through this charade) (20:53)
