Took a bit to get the drift of the story and know the characters, but once that happened I was hooked. Narrators were both exceptional.

Astonishingly descriptive writing. sometimes I would just stop and read a few lines out loud to my husband because the sentence is painted such vivid pictures in my mind
Containing an abundance of very interesting historical information that was unique . Not the same accounts of the time period that have been so often done before. I learned a lot that I didn’t know I didn’t know and I read a lot of of the struggle of fiction and I’ve read a lot of books from these time periods . The author gave us many Rich interesting characters that were resilient, courageous and inspiring. Ordinary people becoming hero’s simply by refusing to ignore evil and choosing to do the right thing regardless of what those all around them were doing. Regardless of personal interests and often consciously putting their very lives and those of their families in danger for the greater good. I was inspired by the characters that would not give up when situations were clearly impossible and their motives were always love. Love of family, love of mankind. Love of France, love for a child or parent. Even the love of beauty and color. This book certainly had more than its share of characters that represented mankind’s lowest nature. representatives of pure evil. And mostly not individuals but large groups of hateful humans. That being said, I appreciated that there were not so many characters that I couldn’t keep track of them that is often times the case with historical fictions and I felt like I knew each character intimately and mini well live in my memory. I’m sure .
It really never cease to amaze me when I contemplate the resilience of the women of the times. just being born a woman was already an enormous handicap. It’s hard to imagine being a woman of the times represented in the book and finding much satisfaction or happiness, feelings being valued and respected m. That was not even a thing. not even an issue, it was more just being free and safe and fed and having some of your babies live. It often seems like that was about all they could expect. Nobility or peasant it didn’t seem to make much of a difference for the women.
The book is not necessarily a fun or happy one but definitely worth reading. Especially because of the many the emphasized issues that are stll still issues we are having to deal with today. When will we ever learn ?

Intriguing historical fiction from uncommon perspectives.

I loved listening to this beautifully written historical fiction. The narration was superb. The stories were intense and will stay with me. I think this should have been two separate books because the two separate time periods and characters did not connect other than being about strong women, strong men hard times, hope and love. So perhaps I just missed something ! Still this book is my favorite of the year

I absolutely loved the prose/ writing, but the story was slow moving weak and difficult to follow. Cannot recommend
