How did a young Parisian mother, celebrated for her beauty and glamour, come to lead the largest spy network in occupied France?

“A passionate, fiery tribute to a historical woman so extraordinary she almost defies belief.”—Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author of The Alice Network and The Briar Club

Morocco, 1928. Marie-Madeleine Méric is not the kind of woman who stays quietly at her husband’s side. Polyglot, pianist, and pilot, she is a woman of many skills, with unconventional interests—like driving in car rallies—that earn her a daredevil reputation. But dabbling in intelligence work to assist her military officer husband and the French government helps her recognize who she is at heart: an adventurer.

Paris, 1936. As Europe teeters on the brink of war, Marie-Madeleine is living in France, her marriage now in shambles, when a chance encounter with an enigmatic spy turns her life upside down. He recruits her to help build a resistance network, and she conceals her identity—and gender—as she navigates a perilous double life.

Eventually, she steps into the role of leader of what is now known as Alliance, despite the naysayers who doubt in a woman’s ability to do so. Capture and death are only a heartbeat away for both Marie-Madeleine and the agents under her care. At the helm of Alliance, she achieves seemingly impossible feats of espionage that help turn the tide of the war. But the most impossible, and dangerous, feat of them all? Falling in love.

New York Times bestselling author Natasha Lester beautifully brings Marie-Madeleine Méric Fourcade’s story to life in this powerful, heartbreaking tale of resilience that reminds us what it means to cherish those we love and fight for them with every breath.

The Mademoiselle Alliance details the extraordinary efforts of Marie-Madeleine Fourcade, a woman of incredible strength and determination who commanded thousands in one of the most effective networks in the French Resistance. A most beautifully written book. Every sentence is crafted, each paragraph is a masterpiece.
For me it started slowly and I am so glad I stuck with it. One of the best books I’ve listened to, and I’ve listened to many books about WW2.

Incredible!

As a devoted reader of Natasha Lester, I’ve come to expect her signature style—seamlessly weaving the past and present through characters whose lives straddle different eras, often tied together by a modern-day discovery that opens the door to historical revelations. The Mademoiselle Alliance, however, stands apart from her usual narrative structure. Rather than the dual timelines I’ve grown accustomed to, this book reads more as a biography than a traditional novel.

That said, it is no less captivating. Lester's lyrical prose and meticulous research bring to life a remarkable woman whose story history has nearly forgotten. With vivid detail and emotional depth, she paints a portrait of courage, intelligence, and determination. Though the format is different, the beauty of Lester's storytelling remains—and through this departure in style, we are offered the privilege of rediscovering a hidden hero of the past.

The Mademoiselle Alliance may not follow the path of her previous works, but it opens a new door—one that honors legacy with grace and reveals history through an intimate, heartfelt lens.

-.Usually I like Saskia Maarleveld but she over did the emoting on this one. I prefer the coolness of Diamond Eye. I did not finish the book.

Families are what we love, live for and fight for…the families we’re born with and those we choose. A country is a family and having it invaded is unsustainable. It’s really the only reason for war and rebellion.

This book, based on true stories of the Alliance, exemplifies the reasons the Resistance was so successful. The barbarity of the world wars can happen again if we do not guard all our families with the same ferocity.

Love of family

I also listened to a non-fiction book about Alliance and Fourcade, and though it wasn’t amazingly written, it was far more interesting. The prose here is often quite good, though sometimes clichéd, the story focuses too much on her romance and her children and not enough on the operations themselves. Yes, she sacrificed a lot by not seeing her children, and it is important for people to understand that her children might have lost their mother had she not survived, but, still, other than learning about some map and U-boat information that Alliance managed to pass to MI6, there was not enough about the operations themselves.

Weak on the action, too much romance
