Wife Shaped Bodies is unexpected and gripping. The protagonist’s voice reminds me of Sylvia Plath’s from The Bell Jar, and the prose with its metaphor and sharpness is just as vivid, if not more so for the fantastical fungal world that Cranehill immerses us in.

Wife, Shaped Bodies is the kind of feminist horror that feels like you’ve wandered into someone else’s fever dream and somehow can’t look away.
Set in a strange dystopian world after a devastating plague, women live with bizarre mushroom-like growths on their bodies while navigating a society that is gruesome, haunting, and deeply unsettling. It’s weird. It’s creepy. It’s dark. And somehow, it’s also absolutely beautiful.
At its heart, this is a story about women, feminine rage, and the realization of just how powerful women can be when they recognize that they are life, they are creation, and they do not need to exist within the confines placed upon them.
The writing is gorgeous, even when what’s happening is grotesque. It has that surreal, dreamlike quality where you’re occasionally thinking, What the hell am I reading? while simultaneously needing to know what happens next.
This is absolutely a weird girl book, and I mean that as the highest compliment.

This is a fantastic feminist dystopian body horror with a heavy helping of mushroom nerd. Stunningly perfect. So glad I found this!

Disgustingly, horrifyingly, delightfully weird

Personally, I love books that really make you think. If you don't, this book might just come across as kinda weird and dreamlike. So, if you like that vibe, you get that here. If you like to think deeply, this book also gives you that. There were a few times I felt like the narrator didn't do the best job conveying the male character's emotion. Like if he said something "forcefully," she did not have any force in her voice to convey that. Otherwise, she did a wonderful job. Overall, I really LOVED this book way more than I thought I would, and it also made me really curious about mycology! Definitely a GREAT READ.
