I’m absolutely ecstatic, so much so, I’m on my second listen after five years. After 10 years and hundreds of books with Audible, I've developed a habit of revisiting favorites for a second and even a third listen. Julia Whelan never disappoints. I searched by narrator again and the universe gifted me this stunner. Her vocal tones aren’t just good – they’re exquisite. She’s magnificent. And Rachel Lyon? A first for me, and what a first. She’s crafted something mystical, morally knotted and utterly audictive. The setup alone hooked me: Lu Rile, a feisty young photographer in early-‘90s Brooklyn, is broke, caregiving for her aging father, and watching her crumbling loft get eyed by developers. Then – click – she accidentally captures the unthinkable in the background of a self-portrait: her neighbors’ son, falling to his death. The image is devastating. It’s also gorgeous. What follows is a tightrope walk between ambition and guilt. The tragedy pulls the building together, especially Lu and the boy’s grieving mother, Kate. Their bond turns raw, intimate, electric – and Lu is torn between the career-making power of that photograph and the love she’s found in the wreckage of it. This book is complicated, intriguing and difficult to put aside. Worth every cent of the $13.32 or a cherished credit. Highly recommended doesn’t even cover it – I want to scream it from the rooftop.
