The oldest cultures in the world have mastered the art of raising happy, well-adjusted children. What can we learn from them?

Hunt, Gather, Parent is full of smart ideas that I immediately wanted to force on my own kids.” —Pamela Druckerman, The New York Times Book Review

When Dr. Michaeleen Doucleff becomes a mother, she examines the studies behind modern parenting guidance and finds the evidence frustratingly limited and often ineffective. Curious to learn about more effective parenting approaches, she visits a Maya village in the Yucatán Peninsula. There she encounters moms and dads who parent in a totally different way than we do—and raise extraordinarily kind, generous, and helpful children without yelling, nagging, or issuing timeouts. What else, Doucleff wonders, are Western parents missing out on?

In Hunt, Gather, Parent, Doucleff sets out with her three-year-old daughter in tow to learn and practice parenting strategies from families in three of the world’s most venerable communities: Maya families in Mexico, Inuit families above the Arctic Circle, and Hadzabe families in Tanzania. She sees that these cultures don’t have the same problems with children that Western parents do. Most strikingly, parents build a relationship with young children that is vastly different from the one many Western parents develop—it’s built on cooperation instead of control, trust instead of fear, and personalized needs instead of standardized development milestones.

Maya parents are masters at raising cooperative children. Without resorting to bribes, threats, or chore charts, Maya parents rear loyal helpers by including kids in household tasks from the time they can walk. Inuit parents have developed a remarkably effective approach for teaching children emotional intelligence. When kids cry, hit, or act out, Inuit parents respond with a calm, gentle demeanor that teaches children how to settle themselves down and think before acting. Hadzabe parents are experts on raising confident, self-driven kids with a simple tool that protects children from stress and anxiety, so common now among American kids.

Not only does Doucleff live with families and observe their methods firsthand, she also applies them with her own daughter, with striking results. She learns to discipline without yelling. She talks to psychologists, neuroscientists, anthropologists, and sociologists and explains how these strategies can impact children’s mental health and development. Filled with practical takeaways that parents can implement immediately, Hunt, Gather, Parent helps us rethink the ways we relate to our children, and reveals a universal parenting paradigm adapted for American families.

I ordered this book for my daughter, a new mom, and ended up listening to it myself. We are both interested in world cultures, and I thought it would be interesting to learn the differences between raising kids in our own culture and how it is done in other cultures. As a teacher, I see so often the negative effects happing to our youth, and I know the struggles I had in raising my own kids. Now that I have a 2.5 year old granddaughter, and another on the way, I thought this book would be good for my daughter, especially to help combat parenting stress, but also for my granddaughters to grow up better adjusted and with less stress as well.

Michaeleen looks at three different cultures, and really delves into what life is like, and how they raise their children, for each. She shares the practices the families do and how it benefits both the parents and family, but also the children. All the while, she compared her own experiences with her daughter to what she has learned from the parents. She then follows that with chapters on HOW to implement those strategies in the readers own life within the confines of Western culture.

The entire book was wonderful and we have already been implementing many of the strategies she discusses (who knew making up stories could get a toddler to do what you want without making a fight?!). I love that I get to be an alloparent to my grandchildren and help my daughter raise them in a way that will be more peaceful AND beneficial to all of us.

This book has been my favorite book about parenting thus far! It really helps put into perspective, how we do things in our culture, and if that is serving us as parents and children. I love these beautiful, powerful, and applicable messages in this book. I have found they make my life as a mom much easier and my interactions with my children much more positive and helpful!! Thank you Michaeleen for sharing your work and bringing the perspectives of native cultures to light.

Have 3 kids, 6, 4 and 2 years old. Overall we’ve done well but we’re feeling a bit limited with parenting techniques. This book was not only filled with very applicable and useful information but it was enjoyable to listen to and we have seen immediate improvements with our children as we have practice these things. I highly recommend it. Not everything works for us but that’s how kids are. Pick the things that can work for you and take that. It’s a great book.

This book is so much helpful information and it was exactly what I was hoping it would be! I loved reading it into it and I did both. There’s so much to absorb here for an American parent who is looking to do things in a different way! It has totally transformed the way that I think about parenting.

Incredible!
