About the Creator and Performer

Maria Bamford is revered for her deeply personal and experimental comedy about mental illness. She starred in the surreal, semi-autobiographical Netflix comedy series Lady Dynamite, about a comedian who suffers a nervous breakdown, and is the star of three unconventional hour-long stand-up specials: Weakness is the Brand, Old Baby, and Maria Bamford, the special, special, special! Maria was the first female comic to have two half-hour Comedy Central Presents specials and starred alongside Patton Oswalt, Zach Galifianakis and Brian Posehn in the Comedy Central series The Comedians of Comedy and Netflix’s Comedians of Comedy: The Movie. She also created and starred in the cult hit web series The Maria Bamford Show, in which she plays all the characters.
Maria is often recognized for her prolific voiceover work, including characters on Big Mouth, BoJack Horseman, Summer Camp Island, Adventure Time, Talking Tom, and Friends, Bob’s Burgers, Legend of Korra, Puss in Boots, CatDog, and PBS’s Emmy-winning series Word Girl. She also stars as Tilly Mulch in Team Coco’s scripted podcast Frontier Tween. Maria played DeBrie Bardeaux on Netflix’s Arrested Development and recurred on the ABC hit series Fresh off the Boat. She is the 2014 winner of the American Comedy Award for Best Club Comic. Maria’s late night appearances include CONAN, The Tonight Show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and Late Night with Seth Meyers. Her new interview series What’sYour Ailment? deals with the various mental struggles of celebrities and premieres as part of the brand new Topic streaming service in late 2019.

Funny thoughtful and genuinely beneficial

the intersection of sincere advice, pragmatic accountability, and sincere encouragement to go for it and be creative- even if it’s not stand up. When I finished I thought, man- I felt like she patted me on the back and said “go feel alive”

Loved it

So I want to write something super profound and positive so Maria feels good and people feel compelled to download this thing.....there I did it.

It’s a good book and the best advice I ever received about comedy...if I had a friend like Maria maybe I would have kept doing comedy even after bombing at the Holy City Zoo in the 80’s. Anyway good book.....I hate writing reviews.

Maria Rocks! :)

Long time fan of Maria Bamford and this Audible book was a great treat. 1-hour of her reading/performing her "self help" book. It is hilarious! Well done, well done indeed. A must for all her fans and stand-up comedy fans in general. :)

For everyone funny or not

Dear Ms. Maria Bamford!
You have been a favorite of mine since I saw you while working on filming on a Judd Apatow movie years ago. I’m a big fan! I procrastinate about everything!!! especially and even listening to a whole Audible book. Guess what I just listened to this WHOLE DAMN BOOK! All at ONCE! That’s very close to being a miracle for me. It’s like a genuinely funny self help book! And no I DON’T want to do comedy but I DO like to listen to you encourage me to get myself together! You seem like a PRO!!!!
and no I was not paid for this endorsement I do not know Maria Bamford although I have seen her perform several times and bought a tea towel of her and her pugs. Which I need to hang up in a frame.

Bamford is an original and hillarious motivator

I mean it's Maria Bamford so you know it's gonna be funny. What's nice is seeing her have a project that focuses on the comforting and motivating aspects of her style and voice. As someone with crippling mental disorders who occasionally dreams of doing standup when life seems worthwhile, this was a fantastic and uplifting listen. Id recommend it to anyone struggling with anything.

Witty and wise

A witty, warm-hearted, tightly-woven and inspiring guide to tackling any creative project or just plain being a person while putting anxiety and self-doubt in perspective. I loved it, laughed a lot and will be re-listening for years to come.

Fantastic Advice for any Artist

I’m not an aspiring comedian, but I am an artist and musician who performs shows, I can relate on so many levels.

Of course, Maria is hilarious.
