About the Creator and Performer

Maria Bamford is revered for her deeply personal and experimental comedy about mental illness. She starred in the surreal, semi-autobiographical Netflix comedy series Lady Dynamite, about a comedian who suffers a nervous breakdown, and is the star of three unconventional hour-long stand-up specials: Weakness is the Brand, Old Baby, and Maria Bamford, the special, special, special! Maria was the first female comic to have two half-hour Comedy Central Presents specials and starred alongside Patton Oswalt, Zach Galifianakis and Brian Posehn in the Comedy Central series The Comedians of Comedy and Netflix’s Comedians of Comedy: The Movie. She also created and starred in the cult hit web series The Maria Bamford Show, in which she plays all the characters.
Maria is often recognized for her prolific voiceover work, including characters on Big Mouth, BoJack Horseman, Summer Camp Island, Adventure Time, Talking Tom, and Friends, Bob’s Burgers, Legend of Korra, Puss in Boots, CatDog, and PBS’s Emmy-winning series Word Girl. She also stars as Tilly Mulch in Team Coco’s scripted podcast Frontier Tween. Maria played DeBrie Bardeaux on Netflix’s Arrested Development and recurred on the ABC hit series Fresh off the Boat. She is the 2014 winner of the American Comedy Award for Best Club Comic. Maria’s late night appearances include CONAN, The Tonight Show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and Late Night with Seth Meyers. Her new interview series What’sYour Ailment? deals with the various mental struggles of celebrities and premieres as part of the brand new Topic streaming service in late 2019.

I can imagine that Maria Bamford's style of comedy is not for everyone, but for me this was a hilarious treat

Laugh Out Loud Funny

I made the mistake of listening to this while jogging. I was laughing so much (even though I was super grumpy because I just got snippy with my wife about said jog) that all the people I passed on the steet must have thought I was nutz.
I do art for a living and found that almost everything in this book could be applied to any creative profession.
I have always found Ms Bamford to be genuine, vulnerable (brave), and hilarious so I don't know if I am biased, but, this is totally worth a DL&Listen, even if it weren't free.

Doesn't teach you to write a joke, but teaches you comedy in her style. OMG, the character work she does in this is great. She doesn't teach it. (She should!) but still, You will leave with some of it.
at times I'm also like is this really a manual, cause it is SOOOO REAL. Not just the good stuff.
I wish I would have known that there were challenges, LIKE DO THIS NOW! stuff.
I am taking a deep breath, then trying the second one tomorrow, Today. well, this book tells you today everything is stand up. :)

This audio book is a treasure. I loved listening to this in my car but realized quickly that my random bursts of laughter were pretty distressing for my toddler who couldn't understand what was so funny. Highly reccomend this book to anyone who needs a laugh whether you really wana write a stand up routine or not.

Not only is this book hilarious, but it's also inspirational, insightful, adorable and comforting. It's like an uplifting pep talk by a loving and sagacious leader who courageously shares the secrets we all have in common.

Bamford is an important and profound artist. But also, silly AF so you LOL like a goon.

If I ever want to break a dark mood, I have two options: mariachi music or Maria Bamford!
