Moments after Lisbeth is born, she’s taken from her mother and handed over to an enslaved wet nurse, Mattie, a young mother separated from her own infant son in order to care for her tiny charge. Thus begins an intense relationship that will shape both of their lives for decades to come. Though Lisbeth leads a life of privilege, she finds nothing but loneliness in the company of her overwhelmed mother and her distant, slave-owning father. As she grows older, Mattie becomes more like family to Lisbeth than her own kin and the girl’s visits to the slaves’ quarters - and their lively and loving community - bring them closer together than ever. But can two women in such disparate circumstances form a bond like theirs without consequence? This deeply moving tale of unlikely love traces the journey of these very different women as each searches for freedom and dignity.

Admittedly, as a Black woman, books dealing with the peculiar institution are hard for me to read, as I am often filled with anger and sadness for what Black people went through during those times. However, the Yellow Crocus had a positive ending, so that made it better. This was a great book that has a great narrator and I highly recommend it.

Great Book.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

YES - IT SHEDS A LOT OF NON-ROMANTICIZED LIGHT ON THE SOCIETAL PRISON THAT SOUTHERNERS WERE LIVING IN

What about Bahni Turpin’s performance did you like?

I ENJOYED HOW SHE BREATHED LIFE INTO THE CHARACTERS WITHOUT BEING STEREOTYPICAL

If you could take any character from Yellow Crocus out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I loved this book! We don't think too often of just how horrible slavery was. It was a miserable time in our country's history. It's important to know how life was then. This book will Pull at your heartstrings. Awesome book! Superb performance!

Phenomenal book!

Made me laugh out loud at times and cry at other times. I didn't want to stop listening. It was one of those books you just couldn't wait to finish, and yet I was sad it was over.

Amazing story

I loved it, felt emotion knowing this narrative was true for slaves. Such an ugly American history that people should NEVER forget

Heart breaking but wonderful story

Equally to reading books about the Holocaust, especially as a German, I want to know about the history of “Black America”. Living in the 21st century, in an interracial marriage with 2 beautiful bi-racial daughters, I cannot imagine the horror of slavery. But what is even more painful is the current racial climate in America. To me it is imperative to educate myself and understand the history of any culture to better understand its people. Racism is an ugly thing of American history that sadly still exists. This story so beautifully told despite the pain also gives us a glimpse for hope, love, and respect for one another.

Heart wrenching

For those who want a good read, and are perhaps in-between genres or books, this is a great palate cleanser. Set in the south during the abolitionist movement, a reader may find themselves rooting for the main characters. This is a story that shows emotional and intellectual growth and feels as though it can be told directly from the lips of those who actually lived during that time.

Historical Fiction at its best!
