Story
Like millions of Americans, Dr. John VanDuyne is stunned to watch President Tom Winston announce his plans to legalize narcotics in a radical bid to destroy the power of the drug cartels. Especially since, as Winston’s personal physician and a government health spokesman, VanDuyne might have expected some prior warning. And now he’s going to be right in the firing line when the uproar begins. For President Winston, his daring plan could turn out to be political suicide. For VanDuvne, it’s going to be much worse than that.

It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

Publisher's Summary
Sheila Lowe’s Poison Pen was hailed as a “fast-paced, crisp...novel that penetrates the world of celebrity.” (Armchair Interviews) And Hollywood forensic handwriting expert Claudia Rose is about to prove once more that no matter what words it forms, a pen will always write the truth.
Claudia Rose’s latest client is a dime-a-dozen type. The widow of a rich older man, Paige Sorensen is younger than - and hated by - her stepchildren. And they’re dead set on proving that Paige forged their father’s signature on his will, which left his entire estate, including the Sorensen Academy, to her.
Intrigued by this real-life soap opera, Claudia soon breaks one of the cardinal rules of business: Never get personally involved. But Claudia has grown attached to a troubled Sorensen student, and when disaster strikes, she’ll realize that reading between the lines can mean the difference between life and death.
“[Claudia’s] sharper, tougher, and more tenacious than ever.” (American Chronicle)

Great Read
Written in Blood (Forensic Handwriting Mystery #2) was another great read by Sheila Lowe. Claudia Rose is a Hollywood forensic handwriting expert and is going to prove that a pen always writes the truth. Her latest client is the widow of a rich older man, Paige Sorensen. She's hated by her step children that want to prove that Paige forged their father's signature on his will. He left his entire estate to her and it includes Sorensen Academy. Claudia gets personally involved which is a cardinal rule of her business. There is a student, Annabelle, at Sorensen that Claudia gets attached to. Then disaster happens and she will go to any lengths to get Annabelle safe. I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to read more by Sheila Lowe.

Claudia meets Annabelle
I am an audiobook fan of these Forensic Mystery Books but the first few audiobooks are being released last. So now I'm getting the backstory and this book 2 is where Claudia meets Annabelle. They are my two favorite characters, each a strong female who constantly clash and constantly admire each other. The sparks flying between them charge up the fascinating tidbits of handwriting forensics interspersed in all their challenging situations. Being a handwriting analysis lover and a mystery lover, this book is a perfect listen for me. I highly recommend it to all.

This is the second book in the series
This is the second book in the series. I read this book in 2014 and just listened to the audiobook in 2020. I enjoyed the audiobook more than reading the kindle book. Anna Crowe is the narrator and she does a lovely job of getting you interested in Claudia Rose. Claudia is a forensic handwriting expert. I am fascinated by forensic handwriting and how it can be useful in solving crimes.

Great mystery
It is amazing the things one will do for love- commit crimes, shelter stray child, follow and save the life of someone. Joel seems to have boundless patience and love for Claudia. Claudia seems to attract danger at every turn. Entertaining and suspenseful. I hadn't figured out the bad guys until revealed. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a great job bringing it to life.

Another well-written story from a very good author
I got this book back earlier this month because the premise sounded good and even though I'd read it before the re-read was even better thanks to Anna Crowe's narration adding to the enjoyment of a very book., Excellent well-written mystery, even better than the first book. The characters are likable & attention-holding. The plot and the sub-plot were both well-developed. “I received a free Audible copy of this book and I'm voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I'll be reading more from this author and in this series. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Even better than book one:)
I liked book one in the series a lot although it did have quite a slow start - introducing all the characters and the background for Claudia and her friends needed space. This installment, being book two, skips all that and we get right into the action:)
This case is definitely different - Claudia has to decide whether the signature on a will is genuine or not... What can be simpler for her, right? And how can that involve assaults, kidnapping and finally murder...? Well, with Claudia everything is possible...:) The book has a bit lighter tone than the first one, is not as dark up to a certain moment, but still it's not a cosy mystery - it has that feel of classic noir stories, not being one exactly.
I like Ms Lowe's writing style; she creates a story that flows smoothly, involves you emotionally and takes you here and there, following seemingly plaudible clues that lead you nowhere and then arriving at a surprising solution. She's also great at creating memorable characters, people with temperament, with flaws, with issues they have to deal with...
As for the narration, it's fantastic. I liked it a lot in book one, I like it even better now. Some of the voices Ms Crowe does are simply perfect for the characters, all are recognizable, all match the characters' personalities very well; and the narrative parts are pure joy to listen to. It's a great interpretation of the book:)

An excellent audiobook
Having really enjoyed the first in this series, Poison Pen, I was keen to listen to this one and hoped it would be as good. Well, I thought it was even better. The story was believable and the characters of Claudia & Joel were fleshed out a little more.
I worked out the villain quite early on and was surprised that Claudia wasn't more suspicious of them but that would have made things more complicated. Anyway, I loved this book and will be starting the next asap.
The narrator is easy to listen to and gives a great performance.
