Jake and Ellie have been through a lot together, from home repair to homicide investigation. So when they decide to open a chocolate-themed bakery, they figure it'll be a piece of cake. With Ellie's old family recipes luring in customers, they expect to make plenty of dough this Fourth of July weekend. Having family home for the holiday only sweetens the deal for Jake - that is, until the ill wind of an early-season hurricane blows up her family's plans. When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the best-selling crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus PĂĽnd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful.

Publisher's Summary
Christmas is just weeks away, but what Jacobia Jake Tiptree discovers at Faye Anne Carmody's house is far from festive: a dazed Faye Anne covered with blood. Her no-good husband, Merle--Eastport's butcher and least-liked citizen--is nowhere in sight. Nowhere, that is, until Jake finds his body--wrapped in his own butcher paper. It looks like an open-and-shut case, but Jake isn't convinced. Then another resident turns up dead, and Jake knows the trail doesn't begin--or end--with Merle. Jake had planned to spend the winter rehabilitating her old house, but now she'll have to work on nailing a killer before her beloved town gets even smaller.

I wish she would get a backbone with the ex-husban
Great mysteries and stellar performance by narrator. I just can't stand how she continues to let her ex walk all over her in the pretense of being civil for their son. Even he stands up to him more than she does and she talks big in her head, but never says it out loud to his face. Gets old after 4 or 5 books.

Some minor narrative inconsistencies, I think
The Arnold’s baby was born a healthy 8lbs girl and is now a boy.
Sam’s drug addiction was emphatically nothing harder and is now everything under the sun.
Tommy’s (Sam’s friend from Eastport) last name changes but he keeps the raccoon tails on his car indicating same Tommy.
Small things awful quick in a much beloved franchise.

the series is really good.....the stories are great. however, the main character, Jacobia, I highly unlikable. flat personality, kind of bitchy and really needs to get over her ex husband.
plus as a carpenter with 30 years experience, the ho e repair portions of the book are torture to listen to. but I will continue to listen.

Entertaining few hours
This was an okay listen but not as good as some of the others in the series. There were a lot of facts presented at the end of the "whodunit" that the listener couldn't possibly have known. This book felt like one the author sort of three on for a seasonal (Xmas) read. Still, you gotta love the characters and the narrator does a good job - except for consistently mispronouncing the word "criminy," which drives me nuts. All in all, it's a nice, light read/listen for when you want to escape the drama of your own life. If you like the series, you have to listen to keep track of what's going on in the lives of our friends in Eastport.

A hidden trapdoor unearths the skeleton of a notorious 1920s flapper with a fresh corpse sitting neatly beside her. With a good old-fashioned Maine murder on their hands, Jake and Ellie are hot on the trail of the murderer - but this time more than their reputations may be on the line.

Story
Jake Tiptree has a problem. A coven of self-styled witches has taken over her Eastport, Maine, waterfront rental property for Halloween - and their repair requests are annoyingly frequent. But while Jake is normally game to take on any fixer-upper challenge, she'd rather be tackling her own needed repairs on her 1823 Federal-style home. Until, that is, preacher Gene Dibble turns up dead - and the whole town is convinced that Jake and her tenants are up to sorcery and skullduggery.

Story
When a mysterious book is unearthed from the foundation of Jake's 1823 fixer-upper, she immediately sends it off to local book historian Horace Robotham. After all, there must be a logical explanation for why the long-buried volume has her name in it - written in what looks suspiciously like blood. But all logic goes out the window when the book disappears - and Horace turns up dead. Â

Story
The infamous Dodd murders are hardly among Eastport's proudest legacies. So when bestselling true-crime author Carolyn Rathbone arrives to research the case for a new book, the locals in the seaside town let her know that she's about as welcome as a spoiled clam. But surely no one would harm a crime writer out of a sense of civic pride--or would they?
