Publisher's summary

When the world ended, former Army Ranger Connor “Tav” McTavish thought he’d prepped for everything. He was wrong.

When roving gangs destroy all semblance of law and order, and the strong take what they want from the weak, Connor will find himself as the sole protector of an all girls' college hidden away in the Green Mountains of Vermont.

Now, his only chance at survival is to show group female liberal arts snowflakes what a real man can do and turn all four of them into survival and combat experts.

Ok, but nothing special. +points for rec. blooper

The story is ok, but I just didn't really get exited enough to look forward to listen further. I can't unfortunately pinpoint why this story didn't grip me unlike some others written by this author. Maybe just wasn't for me.

It's great to have a male and female voice actresses to help you immerse yourself in the world, and I truly appreciated that. But somehow all the female "voices" sounded all the same. It was very hard to know who was talking at times. The male voices were quite easy to differentiate, but I somehow found the main male characters "voice" slightly annoying. Voice actors, if you happen to read this, don't get it wrong, I appreciate your work. And I loved the blooper during the first sex scene towards the end of chapter 9 (of the audiobook). I think I listened to that blooper at least 10 times laughing hard.

children's book

This book has no depth to it. No surprise s or twists. But author did add a few graphic sex scenes to draw in suckers.

It's like a 40 year old man wrote a harem anime

There is so much wrong with this book it isn't even funny. I have no idea where all the good reviews are coming from, this book is utter trash. It is nothing but a creepy power fantasy.

the guy is extremely arrogant, taking over these girls' lives without so much as talking to them to find out who they are as people first. he just takes charge and runs things in an extremely condescending way, and the author thinks that is a good thing. I also an pretty confused why this guy just spend a year in the wilderness, and came out but doesn't have ANY survival or camping gear that they need, any plan on how to get water (how was he getting water while he was camping the past year? Where was his food coming from the past year? All these questions shall remain ignored even though it would have helped him and the girls)

The author also have no clue what an Army Ranger is either, or any idea of military culture. this is especially a pet peeve of mine since I was in the Army for several years as a Combat Engineer and I was good friends with several Rangers. Being a Ranger in the Army isn't even uncommon. There are more Rangers than movies and books would lead you to believe. They certainly aren't special forces as this particular book states. and every time he talks about what Rangers are like, I can't help but roll my eyes.

The knife fighting training scene was abysmal. There was some good information in there, but overall, the author sounded like he was pulling random stuff out of the trash to sound like he knew what he was talking about. the easy fix to this would be to simply no provide any details to the reader. don't tell us how he is training the girls. just vaguely describe the interactions between all of them during the training. That applies to anything you don't have the knowledge to write about. in this book, it's military culture, survival techniques, and knife fighting. which is most of the book by itself. you see why I don't like this book?

The girls are all extremely insulting. Whatever the chick was paid to narrate their lines wasn't enough. all they ever do is fawn over Tav and argue about who gets to have sex with him. It gets really annoying really fast. especially since I find Tav to be an arrogant prick who thinks he is better than everyone else.

lastly, there was a mistake in editing. Whoever cut the audio together left in a mistake the female narrator made. so in the middle of a sex scene you have the meaning female voice start coughing violently and say "As I go through puberty again" before redoing the line. it was like watching a movie where they left a blooper in the movie before jumping back to do the take correctly. It's really funny and I almost crashed my car I was laughing so hard. Best part of the book 10/10.

3hrs in and no plot

I like harem books as much as the next guy, but I do need so kind of plot to follow. Admittedly I didnt finish, but in the three hours I read the only objective was to survive. Which was interesting for a little while but if there isn't any conflict other than survive it gets kinda boring.

Edit:
As I continued to think about why I like other harem fantasies and not this one. The answer becomes very apparent, the women in this story (for as far as I got) offer little to nothing. There characters are pretty faces and that get old very fast. They dont have any personality to them.

Apocalypse meets Man of the House

Great start for a series. Think Tommy Lee Jones’ “Man of the House” and the reality of an EMP aftermath. Just enough romance to show the reality of a lack of choices without distracting from the great survival tips. The very descriptive way of telling the reader about the necessary items and procedures for long term survival and the skills needed to do that makes this an entertaining introductory education into prepping.

Always look forward to Eric Vall's books.

This series has a much more realistic tone than his other books. Strong world building with good character development. Focused on apocalyptic survival and military tactics. Enjoyed the listen. Looking forward to the nest book in the series.

Good book!

The one thing that caught my eye the most is the proper use of survival techniques, the way the character teaches his team is surprisingly simple. Now me being a pervert i enjoyed the other aspects of the story as-well. I look forward to the next in a hopefully long series!

A fantastic first installment

I was honestly hesitant to pick up this series but I can honestly say it was worth it.
If you enjoy Slice of life or survival or harem elements are all with in this book.
well there is not a lot of Action there is a little bit of it.
All the characters feel different and all go threw varies degrees of trouble adapting but really begin doing so nicely.

learned a very important lesson

so the book itself was meh. nothing great. character development, story, and.....well.....everything was just meh.

the one redeeming factor was having a female voice the female characters. its was nice change cause normally male voice actors try to do female voices and that's ok, but not the same. that is the only reason this got that high of a score

now to the lesson:

I don't read the summary prior to purchasing most books. so this book has popped up several times in the "suggested reads" after finishing other books (I have been on a post apocalyptic kick lately). so I had an extra credit and thought "ya why not". so I buy the book as I'm getting ready to leave for work and get in the truck. I hook my phone into the jack that let's my car stereo play the audio and settle in to my drive. first couple hours it's just a standard EMP book (though it felt very rushed). then end of chapter 9 comes along and everything changed. I'm sitting at a stoplight with my windows down and "IT" starts. I scrambled for my phone and it drops to the floor board all while the book is still playing. after a couple seconds I find it and smash the pause button for dear life. releaved that i got it to stop, I take a look around and this old lady in the car next to me, also with her windows down, is staring straight at me. I'm absolutely horrified and she is making eye contact and wont look away. she has a look on her face that is pure disgust. then the light turns green and I take off.

so if nothing else this book taught me 1 VERY valuable lesson : ALWAYS READ THE SUMMARY.

if you want good post-apocalyptic books try:
one second after
the remaining series
mountain man

Fantastic audio book!

Great story and narration by the voice actors! Compelling characters and the story isn't particularly tqrim like so many post apocalyptic stories. A lot of fun to listen to, looking forward to book 2!
