Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Story
In the 25th century, humans have conquered space. The advent of faster-than-light travel has opened up hundreds of habitable planets for colonization, and humans have exploited the virtually limitless space and resources for hundreds of years with impunity. So complacent have they become with the overabundance that armed conflict is a thing of the past, and their machines of war are obsolete and decrepit. What would happen if they were suddenly threatened by a terrifying new enemy?

It's alright but kind of filler
The book is alright. The narrator does a fantastic job and has a wide range of voices. Even characters that only say a sentence or two get a unique voice.
My issue is all the policital posturing and xenophobia. I've read and listen to these books to have fun and get away from that stuff. Not for a simulation of most countries political climate.
The book probably could have been made into a few chapters in another book that made it feel like things moved forward more.
I did almost return the book because of the "malfunctioning" AI. It was okay for part of a chapter but it goes on for the whole book.

I wasn't with any of the MCs
There were four main storylines, and I wasn't on board with the MCs for any of them. It made it really difficult to listen. Also, by the end of the book, I felt like I'd just read some filler story that transitioned between the previous and the next without really going anywhere, and so there was no satisfaction from finishing.
(SPOILERS)
Kit Carson and the Pathfinders - these people are so judgmental, they wouldn't be qualified for a diplomatic mission to Canada. How are these the chosen ambassadors to another world? Also, they waste their entire time trying to talk to the leaders of a world that is *known* to be xenophobic, and when they finally get an audience with the king, seem confused when asked basic questions that would start the diplomatic process off on the right foot.
Ken Hale - his team has decided that the solution to their issue is to make dough boys, even knowing that EVERYONE in the settlement is against it, and then just seems shocked when the people actually rise up in protest.
Jared Hale - willing to sit idly by while tens of thousands of people die, unwilling to lift a finger until he saves his wife and daughter. Like seriously, let humanity die. He's the only one who doesn't have to sacrifice a loved one. I have nothing but hate and contempt for this character.
Mac & Sid - I didn't quite get who they were. Knowing they were machines, it was hard to get immersed in their banter. I found myself fast-forwarding a lot of their scenes because I couldn't stand Sid's glitchy speech. Maybe it works in writing, but it was irritating in audio.

Couldn't Finish It
I enjoyed the first two books, but this third was from out of left field. It didn't seem to relate to the first two books and it just started right in the middle of "stuff". I found my mind wandering as I was listening to it and decided I could better spend my time on another book. Which I did. Last Tango in Cyberspace is WAY BETTER.
There were new characters including robots with dual personalities. The "Robot Talk" drove me nuts. No idea what the point was.
So take this review with a gain of salt because I didn't finish the book. Thanks to Audible I got a credit back. Thank-you Audible!
