Publisher's Summary

When Shetland detective Jimmy Perez finds a body in a hut used by fishermen, it seems to be a straightforward case of suicide. He recognises the victim - a stranger with amnesia who had disrupted a local party the night before his death. Yet this is no desperate act of anguish but the work of a cold and calculating killer.

As Perez investigates, he finds himself mired in the hidden secrets of the small Biddista community. Then another body is found. Perez knows he must break the cycle before another death occurs. But this is a crazy time of year, when night blurs into day and nothing is quite as it seems....

Convoluted

A bit long winded to the point of being a bit boring at times. I’m all for a good Whodunnit but the ending was far fetched and unbelievable. Shame. I will try the next in series to see if it restores my faith but it may be the last in the Shetland ones for me if it’s like this one.

Brilliant

Another superb thriller, the background painted in words of the life of the Shetlands, another great narration. It was hard to see who had committed the crimes, it was an unexpected outcome. Highly commended.

Up to standard

Lovers of Shetland and Peter May's Lewis trilogy will enjoy this, the landscape and community are the real stars. The plot and characters are a tad 2 dimensional.

Absorbing<br />

A compelling and intricate story. The reading gave it even greater authenticity.
Would definitely recommend.

Gentle murder mystery

An enjoyable series. Gentle but full of interpersonal interactions to keep the interest up. Looking forward to the next one.

Something and Nothing

This is the second 'Shetland Series' that I've listened to and while not as good as the first was easy enough listening. The narrator was excellent and made a tepid tale into something much more engaging.

In terms of the plot, the character dynamics jolly us along but I wasn't overly troubled by any tension or suspense one normally expects of detective fiction and the ending specifically was rather trite and disappointing. It's almost like Cleeves got bored with the story and threw the dregs of the tale at the reader. Perhaps, the writer's narrative style has, like her Shetlanders, become rather laconic.

I'm not sure I'm going to bother with any more of the series.

White nights

This is third Shetland novel I’ve listened and each one has been brilliant , a great story well read again by kenny Blyth, I had know idea what the outcome of the story would until right at the end.
