Playing a virtual game is fun...unless the game wants you dead.

Nigel Watson is a clever teenage hacker who uses his skills to make extra spending money. But, after someone plunders his mother’s bank account and drains the funds, Nigel realizes his hacking could save the family.

Soon, Nigel’s online expertise is noticed by the billionaire founder of the Colossal Machine, a virtual game played by millions of people around the planet. When Nigel is given a chance to show his prowess, his skills outshine the work of the current developers. He even discovers new ways to cheat the game that no one else knows. But, Nigel doesn’t realize that his sudden success has made enemies who want him dead.

Nigel is thrust into the shadows of the Dark Web - a hidden part of the internet where evil can find its way to your door. Little does he know, but the object of the game has become Nigel’s life.

In this cyber thriller, you never know who to trust when the virtual world makes it impossible to decrypt friend from foe.

I enjoyed listening to this book. The story is very captivating, and all the details about cybersecurity are so well mixed in the narration that it might seem that this book is just a regular thriller, but hey, it is so much more!
Just by listening to it, the author will screw in your mind important information about cybersecurity (as a start, multifactor identification).

I find fascinating all is behind protecting systems, networks, and programs from digital attacks that I genuinely think this book is something that all the teens or even adults that are approaching the topic will enjoy and find it interesting and useful.

This was my first time listening to D. B. Goodin and I must say I was pleasantly surprised.
The story is captivating and I listened to the entire book in only 4 days! (I usually listen to little bits on my short commute but actually ends up listening to this audiobook at work, while working because I just couldn't stop!)
The characters are well developed and the author does well to make them very easy to relate to.
The narration was generally good and did not interfere with the book.
I would recommend this to anyone even mildly technologically inclined.
I look forward to book 2!

This is a good one! I honestly liked listening to it. I listen to it when I wake up and go to sleep and it makes me think differently and overall have peace and really enjoy listening to it!

Great book!

I had fun recognizing some of the cleverly renamed technologies, security protocols, and software that I actually use in my daily work at a 3-letter government agency. White Hat Black Heart was a ton of fun, some of it in-game! Think Ready Player One meets Bourne Identity, but with better characters. I would follow Nigel and Jet anywhere and will definitely continue reading the Cyber Teen Project audiobook series.

I am recommending this audiobook to my 17yo son, who also levels-up in-game characters for his friends. But, I hope he doesn't get into the kind of trouble Nigel finds himself in.

What a ride!
