Publisher's Summary

Sally O'Malley made a promise to her daddy before he died. She swore she'd look after her sister, Troo. Keep her safe. But like her Granny always said, actions speak louder than words. And Sally would have to agree with her. Because during the summer of 1959, the girls' mother is hospitalized, their stepfather has abandoned them for a six pack, and their big sister, Nell, who was left strict instructions to take care of them, is too busy making out with her boyfriend to notice that Sally and Troo are on the loose. And so is a murderer and molester. Highly imaginative Sally is pretty sure of two things. Who the killer is. And that she's next on his list. If nobody will believe her, she has no choice but to protect herself and Troo as best she can, relying on her own courage and the kindness of her neighbors.

One of the worst books I've read in a long time

Happy audio speed at 1.80 just to get through it. very painful unless you're 13

hands down best

I am so happy that I listened to this book instead of just reading it. I know I would have liked it reading it, but Lesley Kagen's performance made it so much better. She brought the story to life! I really enjoy when authors read their own work.
I loved Sally! Her naive, matter of fact, funny, caring personality was so fun to get to know. She is an old soul.
This story had it all for me. A touch of suspense, with love, sadness, and laughter. I haven't finished a book I have liked this much in a long time.
I can't wait for the next one!

A good, but sometimes rambling story

Would you try another book from Lesley Kagen and/or Lesley Kagen?

Probably not - althoug the story was good, the many side detours and made this a hard listen.

Would you recommend Whistling in the Dark to your friends? Why or why not?

It depends. We discussed this book in bookclub yesterday and the response was that half really liked it and the other half thought it was slow

Do you think Whistling in the Dark needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No, the book tied up everything very nicely.

Couldn’t finish…

I didn’t enjoy the narration and I never connected to the story. It is just aimless meanderings.

Nice little tennage read

I was disappointed that the reviews made this sound like a mature person's read. Okay story, mostly written simply and for young adults

The Way Life Was

This story kept my interest because it was so reminiscent of how life was back in the day. The author not only wrote a story that was very realistic but also read it very well!

Wonderful book!

Great insight into the thoughts of kids. The author has the best voice for her book. She knows exactly what is meant in the writing and certainly expresses it. I laughed out loud and I was also touched. And, she wraps it all up with no loose ends. I wish I could find more authors with this ability. It’s just good clean fun.

Well done!

This author and narrator did a fabulous job. I grew up in a small town and in a dysfunctional family, which does make you grow up faster. I could totally relate to Sally and Troo.

Wow!

What a wonderful story! It started off slowly and built into a wonderfully pleasing mystery. I read the entire book in one setting and am thankful to have discovered my new favorite author.
