Heart wrenching decisions for a young nurse

This was an interesting tale of a young nurse in the 1926 making a decision to take a premie baby to an unorthodox doctor in Coney Island in order to save her life. The story follows the nurse and her consequences of defying conventional medicine at the time.
The story of the child is told from her perspective as an adult and realizing all the circumstances of her birth and the secrets she discovers.
It’s based on facts and the way women were treated and who controls their bodies is still relevant even more so today.

Engaging and educational

Ms. Armstrong created a fantastic story that is interesting and educational as well as engaging to the reader on a personal level. She weaves the two storylines masterfully and develops the characters in a very relatable and real way. It is fascinating to go back in time and learn about life and societal norms and attitudes a decade ago and sheds light on how far we have come as a society.

I really enjoyed the story about the beginnings of neonatal care in the medical industry.
Very interesting and highly recommend.

Interesting story of a little known Dr.

Addison Armstrong wove together a fascinating story of a little known true Dr. and his use incubators to save preemies on Coney Island along with fictional characters that were constantly weighing the desire to save babies with the will of the parents of premies. Very well done.

Fascinating historical fiction

Great first novel by Addison Armstrong. Her love of teaching and passion for those differently abled shines through the fascinating history of Luna Park.

The 2 timelines and mother daughter perspective were intriguing and entire history of premature infant care developments fascinating. My husband and I were totally absorbed in this novel. Narration and story were excellent !

Sappy

Good story but waayyy too sappy in some areas. Nice to learn of the historical context at the end by the author.

informative and fun storyline

I stumbled across this book by accident. having had kids in the NICU myself I thought it would be an interesting read. I never knew how preemies were treated years ago. I liked how the book had the mother and daughters stories intertwined. it was pretty sappy at parts but overall held my attention! I finished the book in a day.

I picked this book because I have read a few books about Coney Island and the Incubator Babies. Being a NICN Nurse of over 40 years this is so interesting to me. What that Dr. accomplished was nothing short of miraculous. But the story itself was so unreal, I can't count how many times I just shock my head and said "Oh ok, that's believable". One of the things that stand out was someone stopping a soldier and telling him "Thank You for your service". That phrase came about recently, not in 1946. Another issue is Nurse Anderson is a nursing student, in clinicals everyday, 7 days a week. She steals a premature baby from the nursery, another issue, and brings it to Coney Island, Luna Park. After 2 months, the baby survives, so she brings it back to the nurses dorm, until she can return it to the baby's mom (who does not know the baby was taken, she believes it died). The baby weighs 5 lbs, newborn size. She is caught, and when the head nurse asks her whose baby it is, she says it's hers. Now she has been in clinicals everyday. #1, when did she have time to have a baby, and #2, no one noticed she was pregnant? Spending 12 hours a day at the hospital? Then the issue of the baby. She steals it, leaves the hospital, gets on a horse and carriage and brings it cross town to Luna Park. No one knows, no one questions.
This subject is an amazing subject. A part of history that changed the way premature babies are cared for. I am only half done with this book, and I don't know if I can finish. If you want to tell a story about a serious subject, make it believable, do research, and don't make it a "dime store novel".
